Then spent ages looking for any word ... Resorted to entering words to eliminate letters but put in PIERT which it accepted as a word. That put me on ...

If you have 3 letters right but all in wrong place what are the odds of them all being still in the wrong place if of course you don't leave them in the wrong place next row

You add a new letter as well to make 4 right but in wrong spots

Very next row you move all 4 letters and still 3 of them are in wrong spots

Made next row easy though

You have three letters and four possible positions for each. So the odds on each individual one being wrong on the next go are 3/4 or 75%. The odds on getting all three wrong are (3/4)x(3/4)X(3/4) = 42%.

In reality, I think the odds would be less than than as that is based on entirely randomly placing the letters. In reality there would be more statistical probability of certain letters being in certain places (e.g. it's uncommon for a word to end with a vowel other than E; you wouldn't choose certain combinations like "FHL" so some of the likely wrong possible combinations would not be chosen.
