Last week I had an opportunity to drive up to Scotland for a few days. I spent them wandering round various distilleries. And now, I'm sitting here, sampling the goods I brought back....
Bloody awesome! I'm a peat whisky lover. So Laphroiag and Lagavulln and Ardbeg are obvious. But tonight I'm sampling Port Charlotte Islay Barley from the Bruichladdich distillery. Never had it before. It's lovely :)
I could spend the rest of my life drinking stuff from Islay....
Lovely place btw. Really beautiful. Plenty of places to stay. I didn't book anything - not the ferry, not the rooms. Just turned up. No problem at all. Even had a cream tea by the side of a deserted beach on a beautiful warm sunny day.
The only slight snag with a few days on Islay is the temptation to spend waay too much money. I ended up buying a half bottle of 21 year old Laphroaig for example. They only sell it in half bottles. It's not cheap. Still, I've got a bottle of Lagavulin that, quite by chance, I've kept a while. I discovered not long back it's worth quite a lot now. Not bad considering I bought it at Heathrow duty free!
Anyway, sorry. I'm maudling. But I do like this stuff rather a lot....
Bob
-
Lol! Why?
Bob
-
I'd forgotten that. Yes. At this time of night it's a lovely subject to discuss!
I've liked Laphroiag for decades. In fact I've liked it so much I never drank it. Used to buy the stuff - but hardly ever drank it. Scared of turning into an old soak. But times are a changing. I don't care any more whether I turn into an old soak or not. And I'm enjoying it!
Cheers
Bob
-
I have a bottle of Laphroaig at home. It needs opening soon!
-
I like the Speyside malts,Glenlivet is a good distillery to visit as it's free and so is the wee dram at the end of the tour.
-
I'll always remember going round Drybroughs brewery in Edinburgh while we on the Edinburgh Tattoo about 1980 ish Little fella at the start of the tour turned around and said. "Shut yer gobs don't ask daft questions and I'll get yer round and into the bar in 10 minutes"
He was true to his word and we finally fell out of the bar 4 hours later not having paid for a thing following week we went to Scottish and Newcastle hour and half tour round the brewery and one free pint

You whiskey experts may be able to help me.
About 25 years ago I had the pleasure of sharing a bottle of malt whiskey with a bloke from the next caravan when we were on holiday in the Lake District.
It was the smoothest, best whiskey I have ever had! and would like to find out what is was.
The only memory I have of it is that it had a distinct flavour of an oak barrel.
Any suggestions of which brand or type it could have been?
-
All I can offer, Hound, is what is is not. It can't be from Islay. I'm afraid I can't offer any more than that. Was it a strong taste? Or a gentle one? Did the taste linger after you swallowed? Were there any other tastes that came through after holding it in your mouth a few seconds? Or after swallowing? I won't know the answer if you can offer any more, but someone might!
Cheers
BobG
PS I've never looked, but surely a google of 'whisky tastes', or something like that, would find somewhere that describes the taste of every whisky?
-
Is whisky a new euphemism for a blow job BobG?
That last post had me in stitches.
-
I usually sup Famous Grouse. Cheap and cheerful. The only thing that lingers after I swallow it is chronic heartburn.
It's well worth the desired effect though.

To be fair, I'd rather suck on a big juicy cock than drink whisky.

Each to their own.... :):):)
Sadly, Nudga, I spent those few days drinking whisky rather than being the the subject of amatory activity.

I think the gist of the thread is about going on a different kind of bender.

Sorry CiM! Couldn't resist.

Never tried homebrew myself.

I hope you are of the female gender!

Anyway I would rather drink whiskey,Or maybe poke my eyes out with red hot knitting needs than indulge in 'Fellatio'
-
Tomintoul could be a candidate?
-
Did it have a smokey taste, peaty or could you taste seaweed? Copps is magic this post is not for you!

You'd rather suck on a cock than drink anything, you little scamp.
What do you think CIM stands for???

A bit of a smokey taste i seem to recall sprotty.
-
I heard it was a bit of a cheesy taste, matured stilton?. I miss mick he knew his stuff on a wide variety of subjects. He sure put a few of you to 'the sword'!.
-
Could be Talisker, invest in a bottle of Talisker you won't be disappointed!
-
:that:
-
Cheers Sproty, i will give that a go.
-
I'm working my way through a bottle of dalmure valour at the minute. Would recommend it to anyone!
-
I honestly don't think you could buy a bad bottle
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/PeterLB/IHC/Whiskey_zpsb6a1aa3f.jpg)
They're all so very different. The cask strength single malts excel, though the grain behind the glass is something special. :).
-
I know you are supposed to but I just can't bring myself to put water in it😜
-
Try it Sporty, you'll discover something.
-
Lol. I cheat. I put a lump of ice in the first glass. As it melts I get the water. But I really can't simply turn the tap on... Still, got 3 different bottles of cask strength to try at some point. I might be forced to deploy 2 ice cubes....
Bob
-
I know you are supposed to but I just can't bring myself to put water in it😜
Sproty, if you buy the 'off the shelf stuff' at 40% then it already has water added to it to get it down to that strength! So whatever you do, DON'T ADD WATER , it doesn't help, in fact, it hinders. If you buy Cask Strength, (highly recommended), then firstly get the 'nose' of it - see what you can smell. Then taste it, let it roll around you mouth before swallowing; what can you taste? Now add a small dash of water, not too cold, and nose it again - notice a difference? you should. Now taste it again, the flavours should, strangely, be more open.
Oh, and please don't add ICE! If you need to cool your dram then use Whisky Stones straight from the freezer, so much better.
-
Have you ever tried adding warm water from the kettle? It makes it taste smoother.
-
Thanks Kato. You're dead right. I know it's a heathen trick....

Well that was a pleasant surprise, and I wasn't expecting it either

I suppose if you can't have water with whisky fresh orange not dilute then in a whisky and orange. 🤔
-
Damn ... I could have done with finding this thread earlier.
I have just bought my Twin Cousins some Cardhu each. I put down some of the bottles mentioned on here but have I selected a not bad one ?
Personally there are 2 drinks I cant stand Whisky :chair: and Guinness :chair: . Actually there must logically be a third. Guinness with Whisky in it ugh... :chair: :chair:

Thank you CiM! I shan't forget that. Wonderful vid. I've learned some things.

Nothing wrong with Cardhu had a few bottles in my time and visited the place.,I think is a couple of miles from the Knockando Distilley.

It's lovely round there, I'd live there tomorrow if the circumstances were right...
-
Adding water is a must, but use only sufficient to take away the burn of the alcohol. Far from diluting the taste, it actually enhances the flavour because your tongue isn't being burned.
And, one other thing, if you must use tap water at least use filtered, the chlorine might not ruin your whisky but it will be less than perfect. If it's a special whisky why risk it. Best to use bottled still water.
-
I prefer a drop of water in it, or ice if i've got any. Is it detrimental to keep Whisky in the fridge? I've thought of trying it to give it a bit of a chill.
-
My personal preference BB is not to chill it, I'm sufficiently chilled by the time I get to the bottom of the first glass.

Forever. However long that is..
I too like a single malt - I don't much care for the blends.
However I have never got the water thing - maybe it stems from growing up believing not to dilute drinks. When I first encountered someone asking for "bitter tops" I thought if you want a bloody shandy, ask for shandy!
-
My Christmas present whiskeys were
Dalwhinnie Winter's gold
Glenfidfich 12 years
Glen moray speyside sherry cask
Jameson's Irish
Singleton Spey cascade
Old Pulteney 12 years
Also got a bottle of the Czech drink Becherovka
What's everyone else got?
-
Famous Grouse
Grants
Johnny Walker
I reckon I'm not quite as loved as you are, Andy!
-
I love ya Dave 😘
-
I'm at this moment going through a bottle of Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey, it's an exeptionally smooth taste
-
I've just had a pint of the Lidl Baileys knock off.
-
I've just woken up after three hours kip.
Pissed on Gordon's gin and tonic.
Almost drank a litre.
Feel terrible now.
-
I've been swigging some rather nice red wine.
BobG
-
Shouldn't you be sipping that wine Bob?
I thought only peasants like me swig wine for fun (Zinfandel usually).
Got a nice Chateau Neuf-du-Pape to go with today's beef though.
That will be sipped. 😉🍷
All the best for the new year.
-
I worry about the number of philistines who have infiltrated onto this forum a'lately.
Such indifference to culture wouldn't be tolerated here in Bentley. If you supped here you would have to show a bit of decorum like what us locals do, even when we're pissed.
-
I thought that was the default position there BB. 😳🍷🍸🍺
-
Me/ I'm a swigger of wine...... I was at it again tonight - whilst discussing the woes of the world with a very well informed Tory supporter with a position of some influence who I've known for probably 30 years now. He's drunk my wine and still hasn't changed his wrongly aligned views :)
Cheers

Idler, only last week I drank the best Zinfandel (or just about any other red) I have ever tasted... Kendall-Jackson - Mendocino County 2010 (California). Say what you like about the Yanks, they make some fantastic red wines.

Wine is for yuppies and sissies and southern softies. Whisky and beer are best.

I never in my life thought I would see yuppies and Woodlands used in the same sentence!!

I'll give it a try. I like Blossom Hill, Sutter Home, Gallo etc.
Trouble is it goes down like pop. Just back from local though, a pint of Black Sheep Blitzen, Wychwood White Witch, Saltaire Blonde and Harvey's Old Ale.
You'll be pleased to know me and my mate have now solved all problems for both Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City.
Ps there is a very strong rumour that Bradford City are signing Ched Evans next week. Heard it from three or four sources in Bradford, also David Nugent supposedly going there.

Has anybody ever tried something called Haig Club Clubman? Somebody bought me a bottle for Crimbo. Apparently it's a "single grain Scotch whisky" which is sufficently obscure to make me extremely suspicious. It comes in a peculiar blue bottle too.
Why they can't buy me some more Laphroaig I don't know. 90% of the people on this planet know I drink the stuff.
Cheers

Bought the father in law a bottle for his birthday tomorrow, still tastes like fisons made it to me
-
Thanks. You're the first person I've ever heard of who's seen or tasted this Haig stuff. "Single grain" really sounds very suspicious. Why isn't it 'single malt'? Why isn't it 'blended'? What is it?!
BobG
-
It's funded by David beckham and Simon fuller.
Sounds like more of a mixer drink. Check out their website, bob

Obviously the adverts with David Beckham worked for someone.
I'd be inclined to hang onto it till some local good cause is looking for tombola prizes. Not for the connoisseur.
-
Thank you chaps :) I'd never heard of the stuff. And seeing it described on the label as 'single grain Scotch whisky' struck me as being completely bizarre. I'll leave it where it is then. Out of sight... Not fit to stand along with my collection of good stuff :)
Cheers Knockers, John
Bob
Later: I've been browsing some whisky websites. There's not very much good being said about the stuff. I think your suggestion, John, is a winner. Oh. I have learned a bit about grain whisky though.
-
Talking of collections, I have 2 bottles of Wallace Single Malt Liquer. Look it up. The recipe was a closely guarded secret, and some soppy bugger lost it. They tried for a couple of years to recreate it and couldn't so decided to stop trying. This stuff is written about by whiskey lovers with a tear in their eye now. Kind of "I've got half a bottle left, so I'm allowing myself one glass at Christmas each year" stuff. I daren't open it.
-
The first cold pint of 1879 in 2017 has just landed on the table - very nice it is too!
-
You in the BVB Al? Will join you in an hour or so.
-
I've ploughed my way through a bottle of Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold over Xmas. Those Highland malts are so easily quaffable, I could happily get through a bottle a week.
I tried a snifter of The Haig Club (original, not the cheaper Clubman variant) at a friend's house on the 28th and I was not at all impressed. It looked a bit like Glenmorangie when I poured it but the aroma and taste were reminiscent of a not particularly good brandy. I wouldn't thank you for a bottle and it retails for around £40!

Single Grain doesn't have to be obscure to be special though Bob This 23 year old Single Grain is suspiciously spectacular ;)

Though I guess the mass produced stuff like Haig Club would fall into the former category. :turd:
-
Thanks Kato. I'm learning something here. I'd never come across single grain before so this is all new to me.
