Brilliant and dedicated top civil servant has died.
I never once heard him on the radio or read him in the papers without coming away better informed and provoked to think.
If we had a few dozen more of him and a few dozen less of the quality of cabinet ministers we've had recently, the country would be in a far healthier state. A massive loss.
-
You mean the Labour-supporting crossbencher?
What a surprise!
-
Every time I think you've become as nastily unpleasant as you're ever going to get, you step up to the plate and prove me wrong.
What the hell is wrong with you?
-
It's very sad that we have lost a brilliant and dedicated top civil servant, and may he Rest in peace.
I do wonder though, if he had been a Tory-supporting crossbencher whether you'd have felt the same about him.
-
I understand exactly what you think.
What I don't understand is how bitter and twisted you have to be to think like that.
-
Billy, you ask for it most of the time.
You could have just have written a nice eulogy about someone you have respect for. Instead you use his death to highlight how terrible the recent (tory) cabinet ministers are.
And then you call others nasty for picking you up on it. No doubt, you believe you have, yet again, been misrepresented.
-
Well said Belton Rover, totally correct
-
Very moving comments in the replies here, from people across the political spectrum.
https://twitter.com/roskerslake/status/1675392026072821761
I've never known anyone to have a bad word to say about him.
-
And no one on here has either.
-
So you lot having a go at BST think that people like Johnson, Hancock, Patel, Braverman, Zahawi, Schapps, Williamson et al deserve our respect eh?.
They need to be constantly called out and compared when good honest people like Kerslake pass on.
You must be off your trolleys.
-
Tommy, no one has suggested that the Tories you have mentioned are beyond reproach have they.
Well, apart from bst in the OP.
I would have thought that he might have mentioned the passing of a decent man without bringing politics into it.
-
Hound
I think it's fair to compare the measure of a man like Kerslake to the current crop when he passes on.
We'll agree to differ.
-
I think reply number three in this thread says it all.
-

With respect, Tommy, you are completely missing the point.

I think reply number 2 says it all and points to where the poster wanted this thread to go, he succeeded
-
Bang on Filo.
I was commenting on the loss (at far too young an age) of someone who has devoted his life and brilliant intellect to making this a better country. Someone who transcended party politics and worked successfully with politicians of all persuasions and was respected by pretty much everyone he interacted with.
BB comes back with that crass, bitter response. And, incidentally, doesn't even seem to understand what a "crossbencher" is.

BST has shown his disrespect for those you mention very clearly and very often for years now, but even a nasty, unpleasant, bitter and twisted person like me has enough decorum to abstain from starting a thread announcing someone's death for the purpose of political point-scoring.

Amazing how often this happens isn't it?
God alone knows what Belton thinks I was apparently wanting to achieve, but he's had years of convincincing himself that he should assume the very worst inference in anything I ever say, so I assume he's vanishing down that hole again.

What the absolute f**k are you on about?
My first post was addressing the quality of politicians we have had across the spectrum for years. Something I've bemoaned regularly.
I didn't say anything party political. You dived in on that theme.

If you haven’t read my post, then you shouldn’t be making comments based on what you think I might have said.
If you have read my post, then grow up and stop pretending you haven’t.

If bst had omitted the last paragraph in his OP then there could have been a very nice thread about a good man.
Perhaps in future he may reflect on that.
-
This is the first thread I’ve read for a long time that BST has started and I only did it because I didn’t know who Bob Kerslake was, but nothing changes with him turning everything in Tory bashing exercise. The days of Harold Wilson are gone and so thank goodness are the days of Tony ( sell the country down the river ) Blair.

I am genuinely bemused. Where the hell have I bashed any political party in this thread?
-
Bob Kerslake was a decent, intelligent and thoughtful individual happy to work with politicians of any persuasion for the good of the country.
How sadly ironic that this thread has descended into indecent, unintelligent, thoughtless petty minded vindictiveness.
Before either side claims that the other started it I'll just give my old Mum's response to such an argument when I was a lad "well you didn't have to continue it"

Quite right Branton. I consider my head banged together with someone.
Some posters just bring out the worst in me.
I should know better by now.

I agree. Absolutely unnecessary. And yet it happens time and again when certain people wade in to discussions in here.

I suspect that because you actually didn’t mention the Tories you will be claiming you weren’t Tory bashing.
You did though say “in recent times” which kind of gives the game away a bit.
Nice back tracking though.

Ah, so your reference to the quality of cabinet ministers we've had recently wasn't a statement solely aimed at Tories, I see. But if that's the case then you can understand why even one of your own apologists misunderstood you also, can't you?

After you had waded in and brought party politics into it you mean? Yeah, I can see how that happened.
For the record, I have regularly bemoaned the poor quality of leading politicians on all sides in recent years. Kerslake has been a senior civil servant since the mid-90s. Under both Labour and Tory governments. The fact that you politicise this eggs on the likes of Draytonian to assume I'm on a "Tory bashing exercise" or Belton to decide (as he does) that I had some sort of agenda.
It's so, so f**king corrosive. It drags every discussion into the shite.
But that wasn't what irked me most about your disgusting post at the head of this thread. It was the fact that you assume I'd use a post about the death of someone I deeply admire for party political reasons.
You shouldn't surprise me. Not after a few weeks ago and your response to a post about my son's mental health was a snarky windup. I should know what to expect and ignore you.
-
No BST, You mentioned recent cabinet ministers in your opening post.
-
I've got a line on the BST troll bingo! The usual 3 posters wading in and trying to turn the op into something totally different.

Yes!
"Recent" as opposed to "in the distant past"
If I'd meant "Tory" I'd have said "Tory". I'm not usually reticent on that.
YOU chose to assume I was making a party political point. Because you cannot help yourself.

But you said 'after I'd waded in and........
Oh, what's the point? I'm sure your followers will believe you!

It seems I’ve been finding the worst in Billy’s posts again.
Of course I should have realised that ‘recent cabinet ministers’ didn’t just mean the tory one for the past god knows how many years. It meant all cabinet ministers back to the days of…of…of…can anyone tell me when the distant past starts? Thatcher? Callaghan? Churchill?
-

Wilts, what did you think Billy meant when he said ‘recent cabinet ministers’?

Come on, really, did you.

10 out of 10 for persistent trolling.
As you have recommended to other posters, maybe it's time you had a break, got away from the keyboard and tried a little Parklife.

I don’t know what your beef is with me, Iberian.
You seem to have taken a very personal dislike to me without actually taking part in any kind of discussion with me, ever.
Troll, you say…
-
Yes Belton will stop at nothing to try and get BST'S attention.
Sad isn't it?
If anyone else had started this thread it would have gotten very little attention, but because it's BST the hyenas can't help themselves.

I just respond to posts where I see fit, Tommy.
You do exactly to me what you incorrectly accuse me doing to Billy.
Here’s something you could do: count up how many times Billy posts anything on here and compare that to how many times I comment on one of Billy’s posts.
Then compare how many times you make some smart arse comment on anything I post.
Then you’ll see exactly who is trying to get a rise from whom.
I’ve really tried being civil to you over the past few months, but you’re not having it, are you?
I’ll keep trying though, because I respect a lot of what you say (when you’re not just having a go, that is).
Life’s too short to be bitter.

Don't take it personally, I dislike trolls in general.
This was supposed to be a post dedicated to a great civil servant that also served the government of Cameron.
However,with your infatuation with BST,you just couldn't help yours3lf.

It was never intended to be that (in my opinion, of course). It should have been, but the opening post made it something else, which I (and many others, it seems) thought it crass at best.
One other thing: you calling me a ‘troll’ doesn’t make it true.
And another thing: Billy chose to ignore my comments a long, long time ago. That’s his choice. I’d be very surprised if he thought he needed someone like you speaking on his behalf.
It’s like you’ve taken it upon yourself to be Mark Weaver to Billy’s Ken Richardson.

Funny how another poster has noticed what you're up to.
I haven't made any comment about you for ages.
You've posted on the Succession thread and I have ignored you as I have done for months, and will continue to do, no smart arsed comments.
I only commented on BST's topic last night as I'd had one too many on our anniversary, usually I no longer get involved as I know you and BB will start.
You will find I haven't posted much on here at all apart from Wordle, which I assume you don't read (don't blame you! )

Like I said, count ‘em up.
You assume, without actually reading and digesting, that any comment I make in response to Billy’s posts is to get a rise from him.
If you could bring yourself to read my first post on here without already having an opinion about what I must be doing, you’ll see nothing wrong with it. Just giving my opinion on why Billy’s opening post was asking for trouble.
The post that Iberian commented on, where I was attempting some sarcasm, was in total exasperation that Billy was ridiculously back tracking and telling us that, given what we already know about his views on recent cabinet ministers, that ‘recent cabinet ministers’ actually meant cabinet ministers from many years and cabinets ago.

Unfortunately, you are wasting your time IR.
Belton decided years ago that he had the right to read the worst possible intention into anything I post on here. It was very wearing which is why I disengaged with dealing with him.
He's clearly not changed, given that post you’ve responded to. He's convinced he knows that I have nefarious intentions and nothing is going to deflect him from that.
It's actually very sad, but it's his choice.

Hahaha ha,'kin hilarious.
95% of your posts remind me of an 80s hit by Animotion.
Never heard of them. Is it a song about integrity, a great sense of humour, and love?
What about the other 5%? I hope it’s Jo Dolce’s ‘Shaddapya Face’.
No the other 5% I imagine you sing along to Ivor Biggun.
-
Feed the trolls and they will bore.
Wilts, did you really think he meant anything other than cabinet ministers beyond the last 13 years.
Come on, really, did you.
If someone played for Rovers recently, is that in the past couple of seasons? 5 years ago? 10 years ago? 20 years ago? It means whatever people want it mean.
Why people have started an argument in a post about a civil servant passing away is best known to those people.

No one has done BST any favours by continuing this thread. I was prepared to let it slide down the thread list into obscurity because I'm not one to gloat, and that's exactly what I would have been doing if I'd continued to provide evidence that the OP was more than a eulogy, and had obvious political anti-Tory tones. As it turns out, the thread hasn't yet run its course, so I'll continue to stick my two-penn'orth in.
BST wrote, it happens time and again when certain people wade in to discussions in here.
His use of the word discussion is testimony to the direction in which he wanted the thread to go. His post should have been intended as a mark of respect, not something to discuss. What would there have been to discuss had he not included political opinion in his post?
-
For the umpteenth time, I did not, ever, at any point in this thread include any political opinion.
You did. Immediately.
Then you've got the gall to lecture people on showing respect?
-
No BST, You mentioned recent cabinet ministers in your opening post.
Yes!
"Recent" as opposed to "in the distant past"
If I'd meant "Tory" I'd have said "Tory". I'm not usually reticent on that.
YOU chose to assume I was making a party political point. Because you cannot help yourself.

Very good - I like a sense of humour.
Keep it up. The forum needs it.

I find it hard not to read that in a Bill Clinton accent when he refused to swallow the story about Monica Lewinsky.

A new definition of wriggle room I think.

A new definition of wriggle room I think.
That's such a well thought out, intelligent addition to a thread about Bob Kerslake.
Nah,we are all on a line for BST bingo trolling again.
I've got two again, only need one more.

Bob Kerslake did so much to regenerate Sheffield where his legacy will live on

Yet all your posts seem to be about you playing troll bingo or alluding to the fact that I like listening to songs highlighting the benefits of masturbation (how did you know?).
What are your thoughts on Bob Kerslake?

Bingo

All seven comments now……. and still nothing in the way of a meaningful contribution.

He really did transform the place. It shows what can be done by brilliant, hard-working people whose first aim is the improvement of society.

Lol. I commented that he was a great civil servant earlier in the thread. Have you made any comment?
No just steamed in attacking a fellow supporter,as per.
No wonder you are known as Grenade G.

That was a simple slip of the thumb, Tommy. I meant to quote Iberian I know that you must have known that I didn’t intend to quote you, based on my response.
Disappointing that you then used it to question my mental health.

Iberian, you really are a strange person.
If you read the thread back you will see that I have passed a favourable comment on Mr Kerslake.
I hadn’t heard of him before this thread began so I looked him up.
He does appear to have been a fine and upstanding person and I have acknowledged that.
Also, I haven’t steamed in and attacked bst at all, merely responded without malice to what he wrote in the OP.
Even Tommy Toes in his early posts on this thread appeared to have thought bst meant the cabinet ministers in the current government.
The way the OP is written it isn’t disingenuous to think that is what bst meant.
Perhaps he wrote it in such a way to invite confusion.
-
if BST meant this thread to be purely one of condolence without any suggestion of his trademark trait of having a go at the Tories at every opportunity then I suggest he refines his communication skills.

I could (in fact, frequently DO) spell stuff out in monosyllables for you, and you'd still insist in dragging every exchange into the sewer where you are most comfortable.
Contemptible.

I see you've triggered your usual game plan with the customary barrage of insults, but at the end of the day denying the truth doesn't change the facts.
-
Yes BB, you've smoked me out.
Every single time I post in here, I think "What can I write that will provoke BB into replying with some disgusting response, while I can claim deniability and then insult him.
And I would have got away with it too if it wasn't absolute b*llocks.

Lets be fair here, if you wrote BB is correct about everything, he’d argue against it, and his lap dogs will tow the line

Onto page 3 now that was allegedly about a ‘good man’ passing.
Imagine writing each one of these threads out onto a condolence card, instead of hammering away on a keyboard & pressing ‘reply’.

That's how things tend to go in this place unfortunately.
