This is chilling.
https://twitter.com/ZaleskiLuke/status/1750371080357675420
He's basically saying he will dismantle the structures that have been trying to hold him to account for his crimes.
Anyone looking at this now knows preci...actually, why the f**k am I bothering? Of course he's a f**king fascist. He tried to stage a coup when he lost the last election. And still there are people in here and millions in America who refuse to ever dream of criticising him.
I always wondered how fascism took off, when the evil, egotistical paranoia of its leaders was so obvious. So it's macabrely fascinating to see it happening in real time. It takes off when enough people just stop f**king caring.
-
Reminds me of Hitler.
-
He needs to be stopped by whatever means necessary.

Christ man, calm down.
It wasn't anything remotely being close to a coup!
The left are just spouting that lie to try and stop him from running, and gullible guardian readers like you lap it up.

I'm currently reading "It Can't Happen Here". Written in 1936, it's theme is America electing a charismatic showman as President, who leads the country into fascism.
It was only 88 years ahead of its time.
I tell you know. If he wins, we are in a world of shite. He had (some) people around him who could control him last time. Every last one of them is now gone and replaced by sycophants. And he's spent 4 years nursing a bruised ego against an electorate that kicked him out. Nothing matters more to the man-child than his ego, and I see him returning like the avenging angel to take his wrath out on those who brought him down.

The structures he is trying to banish should get on with prosecuting and imprisoning this maniac, dismissing his appeals quickly and proving without a shadow of a doubt, plainly and clearly, what a bankrupt crook this bloke is.
-
Am I right in saying that Trump could still be elected President if he was in jail.
If that is so then he could still go ahead with everything that he mentions in that clip.
And could he also pardon himself?

He can certainly be elected, and then your last comment is the first action he takes :headbang: :turd:

Politics in America is like their gun laws. f**ked up.

Astonishing isn't it?
You can't vote in much of the USA if you've been convicted of a felony even after you've been released.
But you CAN be convicted of trying to stage a coup, and yet be elected President from your cell.

“The American republic was founded on a set of beliefs that were tested during the Revolutionary War.
Among them was the idea that all people are created equal, whether European, Native American, or African American, and that these people have fundamental rights, such as liberty, free speech, freedom of religion, due process of law, and freedom of assembly.”
Trump’s rhetoric can be used against him. “Make America great again” but he goes against many of the liberal values that the USA was built upon.
His anti-immigration rhetoric goes against the idea of America being a land of opportunity for anyone.
We can add “Equality under law” as another American value Trump goes against.
The big worry here is the intellectual capability of Biden to win enough people over. We have seen in recent years that simply smearing people as racist and stupid doesn’t work funnily enough.
Bill Clinton was inaugurated 31 years ago and he’s still younger than both Trump and Biden. I can’t believe it’s going to be these 2 again.

As ever, the Simpsons called it 30 years ago.

Biden's team has done a quite brilliant job of steering the American economy out of COVID and past the worst rock of the inflation shock. It'll be seen by future economic historians as a textbook job. The question now is whether the American voters believe their own wallet, or what Fox News and the far right Social Media blitz tells them is happening.
-
I would’ve thought that the left leaning American public would listen to a different station and read different media so wouldn’t be influenced by Fox News and far right social media.

I’m not doubting that. The fact that the USA generates its own energy definitely helped on the inflation front compared to Europe.
Biden is weak at public speaking is what I was trying to say. The Democrats need to build intellectual arguments and narratives of their own, rather than just saying “Orange man bad” this time. It won’t work. Like you said “Biden’s team”, everyone sees he is basically a dummy on stage.
Jan 6th and the events before were a very bad omen. And you’re right, it is following the character development arc of a fascist leader.

It's what's known as being hysterical, mate. They do it in this country. It's not that long since that the "cornered rat", Putin, was going to nuke us all.
I just wish Rovers would move out of the bottom 4, then maybe people would calm down a bit.
-
Aye SS. You never have been able to bring yourself for seeing what Trump is, have you.
He's a sex criminal, a pathetic, creosoted man-child who has an ego as brittle as our defence. But he is also the biggest danger to Western democracy in nearly a century, because he serves no-one but himself.
And have a word with Hound because he doesn't get how elections work. Trump getting elected has f**k all to do with how the more left wing Americans vote. They WILL vote for Biden. And Biden WILL win the national vote by 10 million.
What matters is how a few hundred thousand swing voters come down in half a dozen tight states. And they are going to be bombarded by lies and propaganda from right wing TV stations and targeted social media campaigns, funded by the alliance of Russia and the far right Republicans.
It's up to people to care enough to stop the bas**rd. But if they are like you, never once seeing fault in him, I fear for the outcome.

This from the man who recently tried to sue Michael Cohen for $500mill under the very same defamation law that he now says goes against the First Amendment.

I'm no trump fan whatsoever but labelling him as a sex criminal and ignoring Bidens weird sniffing and feely touchy pedo vibes is just weird, and his son didnt fall far from the apple tree either.

By 'labelling' do you mean 'being found guilty of'?

Nudga he is guilty of sexual assault/rape, I reckon that comes under the label of sex crime

Thanks for reminding me what a good principle it is.
Is that all you've got ?
You try and present yourself as some quasi intellectual political commentator, but yet can't back up your argument, so at best your a far left hack.
What actual evidence do you have that he tried to stage a coup?
-

The US choosing between Trump and Biden has lost its way completely. Most leaders that come to the fore are bad, very bad, The reason is that it is never about the mass of people, it is about the elites in control, alway has been.
Starmer v Sunak - really? This isn't much better.
And this is what many think is about the will of the people.

I seem to recall someone fuming about people being 'labelled'. I can't for the life of me remember who it was.
-
Who was fuming?
-
I can’t stand either of them but Trump is a businessman I doubt Russia and Ukraine would have happened, the Oil Pipeline from British Columbia to the Mississippi Oil refineries would have been built under Trump and that would have eased inflation over here, the capacity was 1.4 million Barrels a day’ INEOS would have had their fingers in that Pie.

I'm here now. I've just got back from that abortion at the Eco, so I'm ready. Hound told me all about your ridiculous rant. Half of my post was tongue in cheek, but you couldn't leave it alone, and I'll tell you why. You're a highly intelligent guy, with a great knowledge of politics and economics; but you're tribal, and often develop a psychotic, pathological hatred of certain individuals in politics which then clouds your judgement.
Despite your intelligence, you lack the wisdom that I have, because I've been on this Earth a lot longer than you, and I can tell you now that it won't make an iota of difference to your life, or mine, or anyone else's whichever one of those clowns, Trump or Biden gets in, or whether or not that other clown, Starmer, gets in. You know who I mean, the architect of the biggest attempt to overthrow democracy this country's ever seen.
You need to look at the bigger picture before coming on here and ranting at people.

Well, I think I know how you can, but still.

Err. Because it's bone idle b*llocks?
Tell me what pearls of wisdom YOU see in it. The bit where SS claims he's so wise he can tell it doesn't matter if a fascist, criminal narcissistic madman (that he's never once criticised) gets back in the White House?

b*llocks to that Billy. You don’t want anyone to engage in discussion with you on this, you just want everyone to fall into line with your (to paraphrase Scawsby) tribal venom.
You are sounding more and more like someone who doesn’t want to live in a democratic world.
-
You're doing that thing you do again Belton.
Tell me. How am supposed to engage with someone who point blank refuses ever to criticise Trump for any transgression, and concludes with no evidence that they are all the same?
Go on. Tell me what there is to "engage" on.

Just like you side stepped my remark that Biden sniffs kids for a living. Is Biden Catholic too?

Not sure how without being more graphic.
Look on YouTube when you get a minute to see how the leader of the most powerful country in the world is inappropriate with children. Then look for his sons naked cocaine fuelled vids and photos.
But apparently, that's OK because they've not been caught and charged yet.
I'm not playing down trump grabbing women "by the pussy" either. He's guilty as charged.
Money and power corrupts.

OK, BST, I'll bite. How am I supposed to engage with someone who point blank refuses ever to criticise the man who was the architect of the biggest attempt to overthrow democracy that this country's ever seen? A man who will probably be our next Prime Minister, and has nothing but disdain for Northern working class people.
-
SS.
You are comparing a sex criminal and insurrectionist to someone who wanted us to have a vote?
Really?
-
And yet trump remains favourite to become president. What does that say about the democrats?
Again the focus is on the bad points but nobody considers why so many (in many countries) are voting for people who you'd think wouldn't make good leaders.
I do think across the world people are immune to just how bad some of these leaders can be and just don't see the direction the world could head in. But why are they voting for people like trump?
America is a fairly right wing country, those who've lived and work there will all have stories of (what I termed idiotic) America first talk. Trump just plays in to that narrative and they lap it up.
-
And especially in Britain pud, tell me again where your vote landed in 2019?
-
Hey Steve I'm fascinated by the revelations (not) that you spend your down-time gossiping about trivia from off topic with the forums' own hilda ogden, is this where you channel your poetry skills you remind me of so often?
Hilda must have a bit of a heavy schedule of late what with you and BB to discuss the secret note taker and other gems, do you get exclusives that then get disseminated out to a wider group?

What are the Democrats supposed to do?
They have managed the economy superbly. But look at what Republicans think.
https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1750887294419042812
Republican voters are convinced that the last election was stolen, and close their eyes to Trump egging on an attack on the Capitol.
There are 40% of voters in the USA who are immune to facts. They are in thrall to Trump and the worse he acts, the more they support him. What are you supposed to do to win them over?
-
Win them over?
:woot: Create instability outside the US.
:woot: Get some US tech in there for folks to cheer.
:woot: Ideally, involve some US deaths in that, but not too many.
:woot: Ensure the "bad guys" are well characatured (Bin Laden/Slanty Eyed Jo/Ruskies/Klingons)
Seems the Democrats are trying mighty damn hard, yes sir!

All well and good but a lot of Americans say they don't feel that and that's what matters to people. Actual mathematics are very different things to how people feel.

Never would have happened if I were still President..... D Trump
-
Yes ... " not even close " he lied without any compunction
How the f*** can he look at himself in the mirror ?

I guess it's easy to lie and not worry about it when there are millions of people who will never hold you to account. Look at the people in this country who still like Johnson.

Personality wins, at least up to where someone's not serving their establishment puppeteers.
Anyone with a personality would win the next election here, even a tory. With the personality of a buried bucket, and lies to fill that bucket ten times over, Starmer still heads the pack but due to no competition.
But thank the lord for "democracy".

You’re right to an extent. Everyone who gets deep in to politics forgets that the “I’d rather go for a pint with him” factor probably gains you +5-10% from people who aren’t really that bothered.

Hilda must have a bit of a heavy schedule of late what with you and BB to discuss the secret note taker and other gems, do you get exclusives that then get disseminated out to a wider group?
After reading that utter gobbledegook, I'll explain to you what it's all about. It's about mates having a bit of banter at the Eco before a Rovers game, something that you turned your back on to go to the other side of the world, and then have the temerity to tell us how to live our lives in OUR country, and who to vote for in a GE, a man who is unprincipled, tells lies, disrespects democracy, and will probably be the worst Labour Prime Minister in history.
Does that answer your question?
-
He will struggle to understand what you are talking about SS because people need mates to be able to have banter with mates.
He would be very surprised at how many people we speak to who have opinions about the vsc community.
He does appear though to be trying to take over as number one defender.

Going with what I said above, Biden states the US base in Northern Jordan was attacked. It was actually the base in Syria, an illegally held base. Biden, as with most American leaders, isn't able to read a map so no surprise there, except that this small detail of which country it is in does matter if you're wanting to start another war.
Trump meanwhile asks for Republicans not to support the war mongering and says if he were president there'd be no war in Iran, Ukraine or anywhere. Votes handed to him on a plate there by the Democrats.
It is rumoured that to try to save face, Biden will attempt an assassination in Iran. This will heat up things, get more people killed. God save the US of A and all who kiss its ass.

Even on Fox News today they were saying how impressive this is.

Whereas the Putin’s & Xi Jinpings of this world don’t need to worry about ‘charm offensive’, they simply state “I’m here…”.

It's a system, both as corrupt as can be with elites always having their way, but yes, where a "leader" does just take power it's easier for those elites. But still they're not safe as such. It's a game of keeping the public onside whatever the system.
My point is, "democracy" is a million miles from people having power. One of its strengths for elites is generating the delusion of people in a "democracy" of thinking they have power.
-
gibberish
-
Democracy will ensure we won’t see the likes of Cameron, Truss, Johnson & Sunak strut the world stage representing the UK as it’s leader probably for another generation.
-
"Democracy" put all those in power.
And it will give us Starmer, and Raynor.
-
Bring it on.
Let’s see how they change things.

2016 was the biggest triumph for Russia in a generation. They spent a fortune to get the orange man-child in the White House and us out of the EU. And still folk won't see it.

I might be wrong, but I believe IR was referring to Johnson when he talked about it happening here. In which case I referred to Starmer also being a charlatan, which I believe he is.

Sfarmer is what used to be called a traitor, he openly led parties who did not support Brexit on crusades to meet up with EU leaders in Brussels and Paris to undermine the Brexit agreement in favour of the EU stance.
He was interviewed more than once on the BBC News who sympathised with us staying in the EU, and could be argued that they were the biggest publicity machine the stay in parties had, standing on the platform of Waterloo Station with other remain MP's stating their case and our need to stay in the EU.
Funny really, it seems it was all shot down by a few letters printed on the side of a bus, the best cost effective publicity stunt ever.

Of course he was referring to Trump initially, but then suggested that it would never happen here, which I assumed to be taking the p*ss out of the people who voted for Johnson, who has been likened to Trump by some people.
-
Ok. So, you consider Starmer to be as bad as a career pathological liar and moral black hole. I get that. I know just how irate you were that Starmer wanted a vote to see if the sort of Brexit we'd been told wasn't on the agenda was actually what people wanted.
No that's cleared up, do you have any criticisms of the crook, sex criminal and insurrectionist, Donald Trump or do you think Starmer cut from the same cloth as him as well?
-

What on Earth is wrong with your understanding of semantics? When have I ever compared Trump to Starmer? It's you who does that. I couldn't give a flying f*ck about Trump; he's not about to lead our country.
My criticism of Starmer is that he's not fit to lead the Labour Party, let alone the country. He's an upper middle class liberalist who has no interest or empathy with working class people whatsoever. He lied about left leaning policies to get the Labour leadership. Now, with a 20 point lead, we see the true Starmer, as he and Reeves are about to unleash the exact same Tory policies that we've had for the last 14 years.
He's a fraud, and an enemy of democracy, and reneges on just about everything. Yet you refuse to criticise him.
-
Well avoided. I'm just remembering the times Trump's sexual behaviour came up in discussion and you never once criticised him, but laid into the "dirty slapper" women in the stories.
I never did quite get that.
-
I see the courts have ruled against his immunity as President and could prevent an appeal to a higher court
-
It was a rather odd defence wasn't it?
I was President, therefore I am immune from prosecution for trying to start a coup.
Shows he considers the role of President to put him above the law. It's quite frightening to think what that might lead him to do if he does win in November.
By the way, here's an insight into the minds of the American Right. Trump's spokesman has said today, "If immunity is not granted to a president, every future president who leaves office will be immediately indicted by the opposing party".
Not "Every President who leaves office after trying to stage a coup."
Just..."Every President."
Because to them, it's not about the rule of law, or about democracy. It's just about using power.
-
Course, if it does go to the Supreme Court, Trump packed it with his backers when he was President.
If the Supreme Court judges that Trump is immune from prosecution for trying to overturn an election...wow!

Biden’s cognitive state is looking increasingly concerning.
After mistaking Macron for a French president who died 30 years ago, he’s called the leader of Egypt the “president of Mexico”.
All this and the case against him being dropped because he’d just present as “an elderly man with poor memory” is serious ammunition for the Republicans. This could be a painful watch.
Can the Democrats replace him on health grounds or is it too late?
-
Biden or Trump with their finger on ‘the nuclear button’.
One wouldn’t remember what it was & why he was pressing it, the other would be thinking “Hell let’s get this business out of the way & just press the nipple shaped red thing. I have a full diary today. Sun bed, hair stylist, twitter & facebook entries before a relaxing afternoon with my three Russian masseurs, I like to call that ‘my time’ so gimme the goddam nipple..err button”.

I am more inclined to see this as the reason why!
Canadian oil exports are constrained by pipeline capacity. Today, only one pipeline—the Trans Mountain pipeline to Vancouver—connects the Canadian oil sands to the sea. The rest of the existing pipeline network links to refineries in the United States where Canadian oil is sold at a discount of as much as $20 a barrel compared to the West Texas Intermediate benchmark price. Part of that price gap is because Canada’s oil has nowhere else to go. A discount sounds like a positive thing for consumers…but it reflects a disincentive to produce more supply.
And Biden best economic policy was to stop the construction of an Oil Pipeline which would have put 1.5 Million Barrels a day into the export market!
So 50% of The US oil imports is purchased at a massive discount from Canada, and if you can’t work out what tha means in real economic terms ask someone in German Industry!

Part of the reason they do is the absolute sham of democracy that exists in the States. Whilst Trump manipulates this for his own ends, he does have a point in the line of the "swamp", although the Republicans are just as much swamp dwellers as the Democrats, just that they play the more right wing "freedom" card, just as the Tories do here.
All in all, the scene over there parallels what we have here, just a little more extreme, advanced. I wouldn't put it past Starmer, given half a chance, to be doing what the Democrats are doing. See the link to read a short summary of Democrats trying to further foil democracy.

And he's at it again.
Today he's retweeted an image of Joe Biden hogtied in the boot of a car.
This sort of incitement was absolutely unthinkable before this abominable man-child came on the scene. He's normalised criminality, daily egregious lying, support for a coup, threats against officials overseeing democratic elections and now implied threats of violence against a sitting President.
And still 40-odd% of the country will not condemn him.
-
Only Trump could think of selling all American Trump bibles for $60 a time.
But isn't he super successful and wealthy, that's a big reason to vote for Trump for his financial acumen... So why is he reduced to flogging overpriced trainers and bibles and so on, to pay for his legal expenses?

He'll win.
Aided by the horrific alternative of a man who can't form a sentence, read an autocue or remember his name, so the defacto president would be kamala harris.
Let that sink in
Unless they cancel the election of course . . .....
-
And what’s wrong with Harris.??
-
This is how democracies end.
The REAL case that he should be facing is the one in Georgia of election interference that would carry a mandatory 5 year minimum prison sentence.
But that ain't going to happen before the election because Trump stuffed the Supreme Court with his supporters, and he's appealed to to Supreme Court to cancel that prosecution.
And get this. The justification for that appeal? He's claiming that no ex-President can be tried for ANY crime they may commit while President.
And guess what? The Supreme Court, instead of doing the right thing, which was to say "Get f**ked, what an utterly stupid claim" has said "Yes, we will seriously consider this claim" delaying the trial for a year.
Meanwhile, pudding headed folk justify supporting this man who WILL bring down democracy in the States if he wins, by bothsidesing the issue.
"Yeah one is a career criminal and would be destroyer of democracy, but the other one misread his autocue sometimes."
-
And what’s wrong with Harris.??
She's deeply unpopular with the American electorate.

The collective minds of the American Republican supporters will make a fascinating case study one day.
See this graph.
https://x.com/Pinkybum1/status/1795890489704780134
Inflation (blue line) consistently outstripped wages under Trump.
Under Biden, wages have consistently outstripped inflation.
The Biden administration has dealt with the economic issues coming from COVID and Putin's War in a consummate way. Inflation is down. Unemployment is at historically low levels. Wages are up. Economic growth is powering ahead.
Yet in polls, 80-90% of Republicans consistently say that the economy has fallen apart under Biden. And so they are going to vote for a career criminal.
-
Oh the hilarity of watching DeNiro stood in a crime ridden, homeless immigrant ridden, violent New York saying Trump would be a disaster
-
Here's the real nightmare situation for American democracy if Trump wins in November. That Supreme Court decision.
That can only go two ways.
1) The SC rules that Trump's appeal is valid and no-one can be tried for crimes they committed while President. Including trying to interfere with the electoral process that kicked him out.
2) The SC rules that the appeal is invalid and a sitting American President is on trial for electoral interference and facing 5 years in the pen.
But yeah, the other side is just as bad.
-
How long before BST hands in his membership to the Democrat Party. There are no options in the USA. Their system is corrupt from its core, including on, erm.... both sides.
-
No ones allowed an opinion unless they agree with billy, everyone is a far right racist if they don't agree with him.
-
Tony.
The bit that people like you don't get is that, along with you absolutely being allowed an opinion, other people are allowed to tell you when your opinion is b*llocks.
In this case, your opinion appears to be that Kamala Harris is so dangerous you'd prefer a criminal you tried to threaten election officials into fiddling votes to keep him in the White House, then incited an attempted coup.
And I'm saying, if that's your opinion, it is b*llocks.

OK, guys, I don't want to get too much into this, but we all want to be around next April to see Rovers get promoted. If a nuclear war kicks off, Putin has made it clear that the UK is getting it first. Under whose administration in the USA is that scenario most likely to happen?
Ask the experts, both military and political. They'll tell you.

Surely if Putin sends a nuke our way we can enlist Richard Wood to head the f**ker back?

The worry that military strategists are very concerned about is this.
Trump wins and totally or effectively pulls the USA out of NATO.
Putin takes that as a green light to invade the Baltics and Poland.
That puts us in 1938 territory. The rest of Europe then either takes a stand against a fascist aggressor, or we turn a blind eye and let the Russians have their empire. Only this time without America to protect the Western half of Europe.
-
What the big countries in Europe (us included) need to do is re arm as fast as possible and make it clear to Putin that if he puts one toe over those borders, we will give the defenders thousands of Storm Shadows and Jaguars and it's make Ukraine look like a cake walk for him.
-
Surely if Putin sends a nuke our way we can enlist Richard Wood to head the f**ker back?

Trump about to deliver an autocue-free speech outside Trump Tower. His supporters are there, waving a massive flag that says "Trump or death".
-
f**king hell, Trump is upping the ante with that speech.
Accusing the judge of being conflicted and a devil.
He's going all in. He knows that if this conviction tips the voters against him, he'll end up in prison for the rest of his life. So he's claiming the entire legal system is broken.
That's a man who wants to be President, saying the courts are f**ked. Imagine what he's doing if he gets back in as President.
-
Christ it's like listening to someone on the bus who's lost it and is shouting about every thought that comes into his head.
"This judge. He put a man in prison. Good man. Man who worked for me for. Ruined his life. He did a plea. "15 YEARS IN PRISON". Who's not gonna take that plea. So he said to him, testify against Trump. And he had a car. Maybe two cars, I don't know, you guys might know. Any of you got cars? You know they might...so they made him take the plea."

If Trump appeases Putin and surrenders Ukraine by cancelling all support, do you think that will make Europe safer?
We already know Putin is eyeing up Moldova and Georgia. He's already making threatening noises to the Baltics, Poland, Finland and Sweden. We know about his ambition to rebuild a Russian empire.
Surrendering Ukraine will just hand Putin a new reservoir of conscripted troops.
The lesson of WWII is appeasement doesn't work.
Our old ally Poland can see the threat, they are on the frontline and they are investigating heavily in the military. They probably have the most effective conventional forces in Europe now. We should take note.

"He did something with the bank. Got in trouble for it. I don't know what it was, all you guys know what it was. But it wasn't crimes. And they made him sign an NDA. You know what an NDA is? Everyone has an NDA. And you know what. HE signed an NDA and it's. You know I'm leading the polls and they brought it back. It's very bad for family and businesses."
-
"it's very bad for family and business"
Spoken like Tony Soprano.
-
In fairness to Trump, I think I understand what he was trying to say in his rant.
It was all about how the courts are broken because all these good people have been prosecuted for "normal" business actions.
I think that's the clue.
What he means is "normal" for him.
-
I'm just digesting Trump calling Biden the most corrupt president in history right after becoming the first president in history to become a convicted fellon.
It's simply following Putin's playbook of accusing your opponent with whatever is levelled at you.
It's playground stuff on the most serious stage.
-
I'm also left scratching my head as to how, suppose devout Americans in the middle states continue to support a convicted criminal and a thoroughly immoral man.
It's difficult to understand. can anyone explain it?
-

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm only talking about the 2 different scenarios of the 2 candidates.
However, if it does kick off, I don't think anti-radiation tablets will do much good.

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm only talking about the 2 different scenarios of the 2 candidates.
However, if it does kick off, I don't think anti-radiation tablets will do much good.
It won't kick off because irritating the atmosphere doesn't suit anyone.
Unless Putin really is unhinged, in which case we have to pray that those closest to him will understand
-
I'm also left scratching my head as to how, suppose devout Americans in the middle states continue to support a convicted criminal and a thoroughly immoral man.
It's difficult to understand. can anyone explain it?
Abortion. The main reason is simple as that really. They want it banned, permanently, by stuffing the supreme court, which is ultimately what happened when Trump got in last time.
Got to remember that American evangelicalism is a very different beast from most other branches of Christianity. It's almost its own separate religious cult that has very little to do with the bible and a lot more to do with political extremism.
-
The abortion thing is something else that genuinely sails over my head .
I know the objection is not about the welfare of the child. For one thing they don't mind putting people to death and indulging in all sorts of cruelty
But now they are preventing abortions by law, they are moving on to banning contraception.
What is that all about?
I dunno, when it comes to religion there is this ancient animal side to humanity that I can't grasp.

You're right with that last sentence, RD. Lots of people think that leaders of nuclear nations have a red button under their desk that they simply press. They don't; there's a huge protocol they have to go through that involves a lot of people.
If those people have doubts about the sanity of the leader, they won't obey the command.

It's about power dynamics.
Banning abortion is about exerting power over feckless, I'll disciplined women.
You see the attitude in here regularly. Multiply that by millions in the fundamentalist Christian states.
-
Be fruitful and multiply seems to be a big thing in religions all over the globe. It's a deep thing.
It will be the death of us.
-
I'm not sure it's even as based as that.
It's just a way of asserting patriarchal authority.
Islam does it.
Catholicism does it.
Fundamentalist Protestantism does it.
It's about control and authority.

Maybe but I guess it's based on a primeval urge.
I suspect we are not better then bacteria eating all the nutrients in a petridish as fast as possible.
I know you're not keen on Malthus.
Right now though, thanks to climate change, we see olive and orange production coming under stress because of extreme temperatures encouraging disease in those trees. Even here in the UK we see excessive rainfall impacting on potato crops.
It's not one off, this is the new normal. Scary stuff.

I think we generally improve with time. We become more rational. Less governed by superstition and appeal to gut instinct over sober analysis.
But we sometimes go backwards for a while. America is doing, certainly. It's quite a shock to see how quickly the Right in America has become so removed from rationality.
-
Mmm. I agree but I think time is against us.
So much to do. So little time.
-
It's noticeable how such conversations are absent from the election.
Heseltine is right when he says this is the most dishonest election ever.

Architecture.
The socialists believed in an unornamented efficient building process that would bring affordable housing to the masses.
Capitalism saw a cheap way of building that was more efficient.
Either way we tend to end up with distopian inhuman cheap living spaces.

God knows because as Farage pointed out, we are building a new house every two minutes and that isn't keeping up.
We can't increase the rate rapidly and already we are building on inappropriate places, flood plains and so on.
Last winter we saw flooding in new estates in Retford and Catcliffe. It's mad.

It's no good building houses that people who need houses can't afford. We need to be building more bottom-rung terraced housing and not loads of expensive semis. But building companies only want to build semis because there's more profit there. I'd have a policy of only giving planning permission for new semis if an equivalent amount of affordable terraced housing was built too. And the terraced housing would have to be built first so they can't backslide out of it if they build the semis first.

Malthus hypothesised that population growth being exponential whilst food production is linear causes food demand to outstrip production, not that climate conditions or plant disease did so.

f**king hell, Trump is upping the ante with that speech.
Well the 1st thing he'll do is pardon himself of all charges against him

How do you make out that atheism is another way of asserting patriarchal authority?
I’m an atheist & having worked on the front line of the NHS would argue all day long that women should have parity with men on every front.
My wife is an atheist too, as I’m sure are many other women.
Look at our world & tell me there is a superior authority ‘looking down on us’ that is ‘there’ for our well-being.

I'm not sure he can, because they are charges brought by state prosecutors, not Federal ones.

I'm not going to get into a debate with you or anyone else about faith. As I've said on here many times, it's a personal and private thing, and there's no scientific proof either way. You're right that some women are atheists, although in my lifetime I've found women in general to be more spiritual than men.
On the subject of women, I've been an advocate of them having the same parity with men on earnings for a long time. As soon as women footballers start filling stadiums, which will soon begin to happen, they should get the same pay as the men.
-
The point is, patriarchal authority IS a fundamental tenet of Catholicism. There's no arguing that, it's a straightforward fact and has been since St Paul brought Aristotle's opinions into Christianity.
Genuinely good for you SS in going against the philosophy of your Church, but don't be under any illusions about it. You ARE going against their teachings.

There is growing evidence that an Omniptesent creator doesn't exist. The theists are ever being squeezed into a corner. Since they are the ones making bold claims, it's really up to them to prove it but all they have is blind faith. Just believe it without question.
Seen objectively, Christianity is an obscure middle eastern cult adopted by the Roman empire (Constantine proclaimed in York) as a more efficient form of social control

They are trying to build 3,000 plus houses on the flood plane at Hatfield, it’s been knee deep in water for the past 6 months.latest ruse is to put 2 metres of pit shale on it, that won’t work.
They’re also trying to put 450 house on the old Pit tip at Edlo, kids who grew up in Edlo will confirm it’s a massive slurry Pond and it moves.

Actually, quite the opposite. Basically old school "science" fails, big time, on the concept of consciousness. Consciousness is after all the one thing we can be certain of. Consciousness of humans we know, of animals probably, of plants perhaps, of single cells, of atoms, of quarks, of photons... all progressively part of science these days. And that then takes us to the collective consciousness, God perhaps. Don't be a dinosaur. We can debate this in another thread if you like.
