McCann Jnr and Robinson just confirmed on Rovers social feeds.

McCann is the project and goes to Alfreton on loan.
-
Does this mean that Robinson will start against Luton? GM said that one of the first signings would be ready for the Luton game. Just my assumption.
-

Our project, should be how to get the right players to keep us in L1
-
Wow. There's plenty of time left in the window, but that is seriously underwhelming.
Just google Darren Robinson and look at his experience.

What an odd thing to say.
Surely we should be improving us now and also looking at players for the future. It doesn’t need to be one or the other

Im pretty sure the signing of bayley will not have a single bit of effect on any budget or plans for the current 1st team.
Doubt it has taken up any time that could be spent on 1st team scouting either.

Give over Steve, I’m sick to death of people slagging off players before they’ve kicked a ball. Happened with street last year, happened with Adelakun and craig the year before. It’s embarrassing

To be fair to steve, he hasnt slagged him of personally, just said he is underwhelmed which is a fair statement.
-
It’s the second of Jan, why is it underwhelming?
What experience had herbie Kane and Matthew craig had before we signed them?
-
Pleased with the confirmation of the Robinson signing. Liked what I saw of him in NI U21s. In those games I felt his contribution was overall better than that offered by Charlie Crew in his two U21 appearances at the same time.
The obvious caveat being it was U21s football but it supports McCanns description of him.
I'm sticking my neck out here but I think he's capable of playing exactly the same way we saw from Gotts on New Year's day.
How long he takes to adjust is anyone's guess but I thinks he's got the potential to be a crowd pleaser.
-

What experience had herbie Kane and Matthew craig had before we signed them?
So who's he going to replace from yesterday's midfield, to make us better?
-
I’ve no idea!
I have never seen him play and neither have you
-
He's also been training with us for weeks and should be ready to go.
-
Chances are, he’ll be on the bench. But he’s been with us training a while. Probably best that he has, as he’s had no serious game time for a month.
Only 5’10” and not very muscular looking but if he plays well, that’s all that matters.
Update: GM reckons he’s a 6 footer, so must be growing!
Midfield looking a bit threadbare with Close not available for a while, so we needed a body in there.
-

So who's he going to replace from yesterday's midfield, to make us better?
Well I think we were happy with the combo of Gotts, Bailey and Clifton so I don't think he'll walk into the starting XI.
I think it's likey he'll bring to the game a bit more than Broadbent. He has a good range of passing, a great engine but can also twist and turn to make space.
McCann said he was a mix of Matthew Craig and Herbie Kane. Not sure he's quite as skillful as Herbie with his tricks and flicks but I can see that potential.
-
It’s wild to assume that just because we looked better in midfield yesterday that we’ve solved the problem. We’ve been allowed to try before we buy so in these circumstances he should be half decent. Good luck to the lad.
-
He's also been training with us for weeks and should be ready to go.
Training fit and match fit are two different things!
-
I also don't agree with denigrating players before they have even kicked a ball for us, this.lad made 2 starts for Hartlepool United when on loan. What more could we ask for?
-
Yep, good luck to both lads. Opportunity Robinsons been waiting for and first rung of the ladder for McCann Junior. Obviously need to add seasoned players to the squad as well but also keep a long term view for the future.
-
Robinson is causing a bit of disappointment among Derby fans for losing him, he sounds very positive and I hope he can become a Wellens type midfielder for us, with plenty of years in the tank! Bayley is quite aware that his dad will not go easy on him, if anything harder! After one more season on loan he could well be a future regular for us. Let's hope so. The other two promised I assume will include a decent striker, maybe two.
-
Striker and centre back, I would think. And still room for a couple more loans after them.
-
Hopeful as ever when we make a new signing, and will back them both to the hilt when on the field. Nevertheless, you’d need to be some optimist to think either are at the required level to get us out of this rut.
If there was a betting market open, it’d be odds on neither are ever up to the level we need them to be.
Still need 3/4 first team ready standard players. 2x CB, a 10 and a striker. Keeper ideally too, no pressure Grant.
-
Maybe McCann genuinely believes we have enough talent in the squad already. He is better equipped to judge this than any of us on this forum and I can't help thinking if Lady luck had not deserted us so badly in this terrible run we would be lower mid table now.
-
I’m surprised there’s not been more fall out from the Bayley McCann signing. He offers us nothing, we’re in the desperate mess at the bottom of the league, and McCann brings his amateur footballer son in to our club. McCann was out for number one when the snake crawled off last time, now his priority is jobs for his kids, not dragging us out of the mess he’s got us in to. It's disgraceful in my opinion.
-
Jake Rooney sent back to Derby from Barnsley!

He was very poor up against Moly in our league game. Don’t think it was his natural position but not a player we should look at on that showing

Wow, what an incredible over the top nasty post this is!
Full of absolute nonsensical drivel too

That's 2 inch in the space of a couple of hours he's grown.
This could become a problem.

He’s played a few games in national league north. He might become a decent player, but he’s not a young lad, and he’s nothing like the level of a league footballer at the moment so I’d bet against it. My point is, if his name wasn’t McCann we wouldn’t have signed him. If we’d have plucked some unknown random from national league north there would have been mayhem, but Grant signs his son and that’s all ok? It’s not for me. Our club should be protected from corruption and favouritism.

You’re talking absolute tripe!
He’s a league one player on loan, lots of players go out on loan and some turn into world class footballers. Grant wouldn’t have signed him if he didn’t think he’d get in our side in the future.
Your view is spiteful for no reason

How many league one players plying their trade in the conference north at 20 years old have turned into world class footballers?

For some stupid reason I read through the whole of your posts, all the way to your final sentence which features the words “favouritism” and even “corruption”!
Sorry, but you’ve lost your argument with those words.

I think Robinson could be a good signing for us. Obviously not the finished article but was highly thought of at Derby a few seasons back. You can’t win really, if we’d have loaned a young player from the league above people would be raging that it’s another loan we are developing for a team above.
Welcome to the club lads
-
Looking at Robinson’s struggle for game time in weaker leagues than League One, it’s not unfair to assume he’s likely just a squad option for now with view to developing him in to something further.
The next two or three signings are going to be the make or break ones.

He was still a teenager when he signed for Hartlepool, and looks like he did well at st Patrick’s, starting for them away at besiktas

That was just last season at Hartlepool in the National League though.
And he barely featured in the league for St Pats this year in the Irish league.
-
August 2024 so 16 months ago,
He only joined st pats for 4 months or so,
And we’ve seen countless times now, how players do elsewhere is pretty irrelevent

He’s been playing in the Conference North for Alfreton, Barnsley in Vertu Trophy and Northern Ireland U21s , so which part is amateur football ?

You think I’m being negative.
I just said that based on the best available evidence he’s likely going to start off as a squad player and that I expect the next few signings to be of a higher profile / more experienced.
-
Day 2 of the transfer window and we have 2 players in. 29 more days to go. We are told there are more to come.
Robinson sounds a decent signing imho, aggressive and physical, hopefully just what we need, and will get my support until he proves otherwise.
Bailey McCann, not sure what to make of this as the manager and player are taking a big chance. Could go tits up and look like a huge mistake or we could end up with a Liam Delap or Josh Windass who takes us forward both league-wise and/or financially, in the long term. No one knows yet but I’m willing to trust in GM and hope for the best.
I hope these, and others brought in, help us in our current predicament and we start rising up the league.

I've got no issue with the father/son thing, I do have a two concerns though.
1; will the pressure of being the mangers son be too much for Bayley to overcome?
2; if he's a player with potential, why did Barnsley let him go?

You’re totally right re top players spending time on loan. Not as easy to find as many playing in National North at 20 who became top players.
Most who end up very good are on loan in L1 or championship. But with McCann if he’s been scoring and doing well I think we’d be happy with the signing to develop if he had no relation to Grant.

I would hope the extra pressure brings out the best in him. Im hoping he will run through brick walls for his dad!
In terms of potential, its all about opinions, we have let a few go that have gone on to better things.

Im talking about league 1 players who go out on loan and become world class. Most class Premier league players go to a good championship club.
We (Rovers) are desperate for a few league one quality players just to stabilise the club this year, as some fans, myself included don't fancy dropping down a division again !
-
It does have an odd feeling that a manager signs his son, however, this will be very small fry in financial terms and extremely low risk with potential good returns if he does come good.
It certainly doesn’t warrant the response it got in this topic.
I know nothing about Robinson, but great to have a bit of size and strength in midfield.
We need to fo all we can to stay in the league (obviously) I just have the feeling next season if we do stay up, could be a very good one.

I suppose it's a bit like sons introduced to father's business. The pressure comes from three sides there - fellow employees and the intermediate bosses as well as Dad. Here we can add fans and you can't stop people "using" it detrimentally.
It is a challenging situation for "Junior".

Just listening to his interview I think Bayley is well aware that he will be held to a higher standard by his Dad than other squad members! As for moving out of Barnsley I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it is Bayley's choice rather than Barnsley's, he must have seen the set up at Donny and fancied being part of it.
-
If you go on the Barnsley forum quite a few of the Dingles rated him , but as someone previously put he’s on been playing amateur football.
Also someone who I and travel with to most matches is a golfing mate of one the Alfreton players and I’m going see if he’s said anything about him.

To be fair most bigger clubs think their fringe players are good enough to drop down a league or two, however it’s not that easy/simple.
I like what I’m hearing of him though, and hopefully that translates into someone who can be an important player for us.
I will remain cautious though until Iv seen him, as Olusanya was described as quality with a lot of interest in him allegedly.

I’ve been thinking about the Nepotism situation and thinking he’s going to come under scrutiny for this. The one positive I can see as that as Bayley’s father Grant is going to be spending his own time and expertise nurturing, mentoring and developing him whatever club he’s at, so it’s a positive that we’ll be getting that input to one of our assets. Whether it comes off is another question, I’m sure they’re both aware of the added pressure.
-
People should lay off of the big words without knowing how to use them.
Moving to us from the Dingles is arguably a step down currently (at best sideways). Hardly a step up.
-

Suspicious!! If he thinks the lad has potential and can be developed into an asset then great. Not really suspicious at all. Hes going out in loan to hopefully develop. Now if he was on 5k a week and put straight into the squad then yeah. But no! Its a no risk punt. I think people should wait and trust a little bit more instead of the cynicism. My bet is if we were top of the league people would be more open to it.
-
It’ll be interesting if he doesn’t make it and Grant has to let him go ! That would make it a very interesting conversation in their household over a Friday night supper !!!!

yep and thats football. Im sure they both know the pressure and the risk. Imagine he does really well and wants to leave for more money! Works both ways.
-
I don’t agree with the strength of language used but can understand some of the concerns shared within this thread. You would hope that there were enough other opinions on whether Bayley would represent a good signing or at least one with potential, though, and it wasn’t purely driven by Grant himself.

Were any of them failing to get in the Barnsley team at the time? Or were they all world class players within world class youth setups
The obvious point is, young players often drop down a few levels on loan and then establish themselves at a higher level. Alfreton are only 3 levels below us,

It might surprise some on here but I quite like the situation but it will take time to come to fruition'
It's a clever way to partly get around having no u21s will partly fund some of the players contract if they are out on loan, and they will be playing at a standard and style of football some u21s fail to adapt to despite having huge technical talent.
I have watched both players and have looked back at the reports I have on them, and although not stand outs in the games they did well enough.
In fact in Baileys case my mate and I were at Lemington I think to watch Jack Goodman who never played and a sub for Peterborough Sports and Bailey played for Peterborough Sports playing right back, and have seen him in one or two games since including playing in the EFL cup against us when he performed well.
Robinson I watched at younger age group football at Notts Forest along with Will Flint. bare in mind they left one of the countries best teams at their age group who won the European academy title last season beating the top sides in Europe, and had u18s/19s England internationals in their side coming through, so found it hard to keep a settled position in the team and moved on to us and in Robinson's case Derby.
So we will have a nucleus for the first time in years of players shoving the first team squad if you include our own players mentioned by Grant.
The only slight worry I have and from experience we do not want us to to push players above our own because they have played at other higher in the table teams as has happened in the past and are not as good as our own together with the advantage some have had because they have been brought in from other clubs and people in the management teams need to verify why they were brought to the club, and not all will be great signings it's just a fact of life.

What if he's a decent player?
He’s played a few games in national league north. He might become a decent player, but he’s not a young lad, and he’s nothing like the level of a league footballer at the moment so I’d bet against it. My point is, if his name wasn’t McCann we wouldn’t have signed him. If we’d have plucked some unknown random from national league north there would have been mayhem, but Grant signs his son and that’s all ok? It’s not for me. Our club should be protected from corruption and favouritism.
Appreciate this is a forum to air your views but i find your post offensive! Its full of bias, assumption and slanderous suggestion. If the manager believes his son has the potential to be successful then i would rather him be successful with us than Barnsley.
I've got no issue with the father/son thing, I do have a two concerns though.
1; will the pressure of being the mangers son be too much for Bayley to overcome?
2; if he's a player with potential, why did Barnsley let him go?
From what I have heard he wants to be part of first team squad next season and Barnsley said it will be another loan in a higher league (so National league or L2) bit like the Faulkner situation, but this time he asked to leave because he obviously agreed that there a place for him with us an a chance to get in the first team squad next season with us.

I don’t think Oldham fans are asking those questions about father and son with the goals he’s knocking in right now. This is one of the last things I’d accuse of McCann of right now I trust he’s good enough to be signed
-
Wellens lad is doing well under his dad.
-
….7 year contract at £3,500 a week with a 50% increase each year, £2,000 a week appearance money, £2,500 per goal, £4,000 per win bonus, no sell on clause. His mum has put his board upto £3,000 a week, with and extra £250 every time she does his washing

Wellens lad is doing well under his dad.
Indeed. It also worked out very well at Forrest with Brian and Nigel. Some people here need to give their heads a wobble.
-
For some people McCann is clearly above being scrutinised.
I told my wife who has no interest in football that the rovers manager has signed his son, she said “that sounds dodgy, is that allowed?”. I think that is a natural reaction, not just in football but anywhere. It brings in to question whether the person is there on merit or not.
The problem comes when Grant eventually starts putting him in the team, if he doesn’t perform and keeps his place it will demotivate the entire squad. “He’s only playing because his dad’s the manager” etc.
I hope he’s a good player for us but there’s so many ways this could go wrong. Of all the young talents we could have signed we’ve coincidentally happened to sign the managers son.

The optics don't look great, but he isn't the worst u21s player I have watched in u21s football the last few years, and has experience in a league where if you don't stand up they will walk all over you.
The club have stated he is one for the future and is work in progress, but at least he is not starting from scratch, and will have played, and against a number of different styles of play unlike most of the cossetted u21s players we have tried to give a grounding to and failed in the most part.

Happened at glenotran with feeney playing his 15 year old son got hammered for it but his son ended up at spurs so not always a bad thing
-
Feeney is now Harry Kewell assistant at Hanoi FC, a bit different to East Belfast
-
Feels like the deal was done because Conor Hourihane was due to release him at the end of the season. Remembers seeing him play in the cup game at Barnsley, he played well. S
-
McCann is the project and goes to Alfreton on loan.
Joe Dodoo is at Alfreton - no idea if McCann managed him here

Aye, probably same with Robinson. Otherwise they'd be demanding decent fees, and we wouldn't have any interest. We're just helping protect his son, and their budget is probably being cut due to unlikely return to the Championship.
-
Barnsley's budget is to be cut substantially next season to something in line more with ours unless something special happens on the pitch and results in the second half of the season propel then upwards.

Is seen robbo is matty craig 2.0 who does matty play for now. I have tryed looking but canny see anything
-
Last time I heard he was at the Dingles !

He went to Mansfield after that. Think he's back at spurs now
