opponents days out that you miss
« on September 20, 2010, 01:06:21 pm by not on facebook »
was flicking through a box of olde rovers home/away programmes
and when i look at any programme i can recall something about that day if it's a away day programme.

got me thinking if there is one awayday fixture that you miss
with the rovers basically now playing against different teams.

which game would you like to bring back.

i go for YORK CITY,great city

20mins on the train,to which you allways did your up most
to jib the train fare.

allways in york for opening time, good drink

allways a decent rovers following.

i cant recall rovers ever comming away with full points in
said game, maybe thats down to the drink.

york was that good, when the season finished we would go 10+
20+ handed just for the saturday day out on the lash many a time.

bring back york city

I always enjoyed York aswell.  Tranmere is another shout, great ground for a pre match pub visit.

once went to a rochdale v rovers game and on the same day there
was a national front march in dale town centre.

outcome was that the donny lads got a good kicking from roachdale lads and the national front members.

broken noses, broken arms fat lips black eyes all round for the donny lot.

nowt like been in the wrong town at the wrong time is there.

football for yers as you never knew who was just round the next corner.

York for the \"good old days\" and if Chesterfield were still there Saltergate would be on that list - always crap weather, crap facilities and usually a crap game too. Real football for miserable old men

Scarborough for the seaside experience although the Torquay trip in L1 was one I would like to repeat - it seemed a bit more special being far away!

Scarborough and Tranmere definatly

Rushden and diamonds was a nice ground for conference level.

I just miss the terrancing and it was confirmed to me that I missed it when we scored that last minute winner last season at Peterborough.
Everyone just went mentle and could jump and bounce wherever they liked and most people did end up celebrating a long was from where they was originally stood  :cheer:

rushden and diamonds what a bugger to get to,nearest train

York without doubt. I always liked Carlisle and Hartlepool (good for a drink or two). I always really liked Chester, the ground is crap and to far out of the way but Chester is a good night out.

Ive got to say i dont miss going to Southend.

Yeah i agree with Hartlepool always being good for a few pints, we always went in the club next to the ground, think it was called something like Raglan coyt, only negative about Hartlepool though its always fooking freezing, you need your thermals on even in August  :)

Miss going to Scarborough, Rochdale and Chester...

Also seeing as I no longer live in Donny I also miss going to Goole, Thorne Colliery and Hatfield Main.  Used to love the double header of Scunthorpe away (midday ko) followed by Goole at home.

How about Torquay on an August Bank Holiday weekend. Get the supporters bus from Waterdale Friday night with our regular Yorkshire Traction away driver Arthur. Travel through the night with the \"lovely Sue entertaining the boys on the back seat on the way down.
Get stuck in Bank Holiday traffic alongside a milk float making early morning deliveries, one of the lads sat in the door well with the door open passing bottles of milk into the bus every time we came alongside, likewise the fruit and veg van. Oh how we laughed.
Throwing deck chairs into the sea, one fan arrested for stealing a whole \"branch\" of bananas not just a bunch .... well he was easily spotted.
Drawing 1-1.
Waiting with my girlfriend for the bus in the pre-arranged pickup only to find it had been changed and no-one told us, walking along the seafront wondering how we would get home only to see the bus trundling along looking for us.
Arriving back in Donny mid morning Sunday and waiting in the Northern Bus Station for the 1st bus at 12.00 mid-day.
What joy ....those were the days

Remember when Rod Johnson was about to take a corner kick at Halifax, he lifted the turf to show wooden boarding underneath. It was the pitch extended out onto the speedway track

I always miss Rochdale. And Kidderminster actually. Dale for the old fashioned ground it used to be and the memory of the inoffesnive Murray tipping one of their blokes over the pitchside wall and the Harriers for the soup, the chips from that place opposite the station and the sound of those steam engines tootling up and down as Rovers piled on the pressure.

Rushden was a fair place as grounds go too - but a dog to get to and sod all there when you were outside it.

Cheers

I used to love Burnley's away end, right next to the home end with just chicken mesh to seperate us. It was a huge stand that swept from the side of the pitch right around to the back of the ground.

I really used to enjoy Darlington - there was a pub there we always went to called 'The Speedwell' and it was one of the easiest places to get Nightporter into with his chair! Beer seemed to stay the same price for years too!

Also enjoyed a couple of cracking trips down to Colchester, and one in particular where Jamie Lawrence grabbed a couple of early goals - On the way up home we were in Nightporter's car on some A-Road/Motorway and one of the Kettlewells buses shot across a bridge as we passed under it heading in a completely different direction to us - ther was no turn off or place to turn round on our road for what seemed like 30 miles or so, I'm sure we ended up close to Felixstowe or somewhere like that! Maybe Nightporter can shed some more light on that one!

Walsall and Shrewsbury were also particularly good away days as a young'un too, especially if we were playing for the Junior Rovers before the game - happy days!

I'll tell you what tho' as much as I miss some of those trips, I'd sooner be heading to places like QPR and Watford, Middlesborough, Norwich, Ipswich and places like that - How times change eh? :)

I was at that game, it was incredible. Rovers dominated it from start to finish but every time Halifax attacked they scored. :S

Bootham Cresent, The Theatre of Chips, Feethams and the slope at Forest Green. I miss all of those.

I didn't particularly like the ground but I always liked an away trip to Lincoln too.

Further afield the long trip to Shrewsbury was good, and the ground being called Gay Meadow was always worth a laugh. I quite liked the trips to the South West in general Yeovil, Cheltenham, Hereford and Torquay for the seaside.

Yes i remember going to work the morning after and telling my workmates that we were beaten by 6 lucky goals and as you say we dominated the game, if i remember right, big Dennis had a nightmare in goal.
