I was 'lucky' as I used to be based at RAF Finningley and used to have to work every air show.  Spent a lot of the day stuck inside SHQ (Station Head Quarters) counting the money takings; however, we got plenty of breaks and would go onto the top of the building to watch the arrows or the Vulcans doing their stuff.

I've 'worked' several RAF Waddington air shows also; I used to be positioned about 100 yards of the main runway in our Squadron Bar...... a tough job........ etc etc

I used to work at Finningley in stores, civillian so didnt have to work on the day.Still went every year and got in free.Rose and Acorn after show was always a good night.

I remember going to Finningley late 60's early 70's and watched the vulcans carry out a 4 ship QRA scramble - the earth shook that day it was so loud. Plumes of black exhaust smoke out the back from the 4 engines as they disappeared into the distance. They did a trip around Scotland and followed up with a low level pass of Finningley - a fantastic sight.

Would i be correct in saying that finningley had the only runway in UK
That was wide enough to allow that  type take off to take place

And hence why vulcans were based at finningley

I may be slightly off the mark with this but when I was a lad we lived on the quarters at RAF Lindholme as my dad worked at Northern Radar across the road from the airfield.

I'm fairly sure that the vulcans were based at Lindholme as after it was closed and was converted to a Prison, the RAF offered the Prison a decommissioned Vulcan to display at the entrance.

The Prison Service declined the offer but we're presented with a large triangular engraved plaque which apparently was cut from the wing of a Vulcan and then chrome plated?

Like I said at the start, the memory is cloudy so may be slightly inaccurate.

When my Dad passed away 6 years ago I came across an old 8mm cine film and on the box was written Lindholme airshow, I've since been informed that it was actually Finningley airshow, I posted the footage on youtube, the people in the video are my late uncle and cousins, they emigrated to Australia in 1969, the footage is below

nice, as some of the comments say the white Vulcan appears to be xh558 which is the  only one left flying today

I would be tempted to email a link to the clip to http://www.vulcantothesky.org/faq-contact.html for their  archives

Iv worked there since it opened, so see the Vulcan quite often.
Look after runway lights, gennys and ups systems mainly but all site engineering when it suits! Been doing repairs to tarmac on runway today (shut from 10-12) its in a shocking state! Runways 60Meters wide most are 40, its 1.9Km long!
we were handed over to by old PSA engineer the width was that because it used to be the European landing strip for the shuttle. Last relayed in 92 funded jointly by MOD and NASSA.

maybe iam Reading this wrong but was the runway 60m wide so it could accomadate the Vulcan formation take off,and the Vulcan was based there during
the Cold war, hence well before teaming up with the Shuttle and nassa

I seem to remember it having one of the longer runways in the UK, if I also remember right it had stands for the Vulcan's to sit in waiting to scramble that led directly on to the runway. They didn't all disappear down the runway together, they went off at about 30 second intervals. So 4 Vulcan's in the air in about 2 minutes. Jet noise - the sound of freedom

Glosterred, your correct the old dwg's show them. Long gone but the old inset light fittings are still in on the runway edge.
Poster mentioning the Rose and acorn? It was pulled down in 06-07. Last used as a band's practice venue. Not much left of the old place now im afraid. Best kept building is old officers mess, Now Hill house school.
