I was 'lucky' as I used to be based at RAF Finningley and used to have to work every air show. Spent a lot of the day stuck inside SHQ (Station Head Quarters) counting the money takings; however, we got plenty of breaks and would go onto the top of the building to watch the arrows or the Vulcans doing their stuff. I've 'worked' several RAF Waddington air shows also; I used to be positioned about 100 yards of the main runway in our Squadron Bar...... a tough job........ etc etc
I remember going to Finningley late 60's early 70's and watched the vulcans carry out a 4 ship QRA scramble - the earth shook that day it was so loud. Plumes of black exhaust smoke out the back from the 4 engines as they disappeared into the distance. They did a trip around Scotland and followed up with a low level pass of Finningley - a fantastic sight.
When my Dad passed away 6 years ago I came across an old 8mm cine film and on the box was written Lindholme airshow, I've since been informed that it was actually Finningley airshow, I posted the footage on youtube, the people in the video are my late uncle and cousins, they emigrated to Australia in 1969, the footage is belowhttp://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sG6pchVDHzU
Iv worked there since it opened, so see the Vulcan quite often.Look after runway lights, gennys and ups systems mainly but all site engineering when it suits! Been doing repairs to tarmac on runway today (shut from 10-12) its in a shocking state! Runways 60Meters wide most are 40, its 1.9Km long!we were handed over to by old PSA engineer the width was that because it used to be the European landing strip for the shuttle. Last relayed in 92 funded jointly by MOD and NASSA.
