Looking at win ratios (FWIW) of managers that have been with us for more than 30 games, the table goes:

Penney 48
Leivers 46
Bestall 45
Menzies 44
Raynor 43
Curtis 40
Ray 38
Anderson 37
Emery 37
SOD 36
Saunders 36
Chung 35
Bremner 34
Doherty 34
Snodin 34
McMenemy 33
Molloy 32
Wignall 32
Setters 31
Dickov 30
Crayston 30
Hold 29
Beaglehole 24
MacKay 23
Kettleborough 21

(stats via Soccerbase - the Ian Atkins stats are grossly wrong there so omitted him, pretty sure Beaglehole stats are out too)

JF as you mention can't be a legend but at least (as far as I'm aware) he's not slagging us off to anyone who will listen

I suspect Weavers' win ratio is a tad flattering as well Brizzle! ha ha ha!! Imagine him winning 31% of his games in charge. The tosser.

Penney and SO'D. Along with Billy Bremner, best managers in my lifetime. The Penney years were raw and exciting. Lots of guts, passion and strength. Really enjoyed those years. SOD took us to the heights few of us have seen. And some of the football was beautiful. But, couldn't sustain it. Both brilliant for us at their peak, with different but no less entertaining styles.

Surely 3.1% is closer to the mark!

I can't remember how many games he was officially in charge for.  It tended to be between other "managers" (the term is used in its loosest sense here) so he may have only managed a handful of games and perhaps one or two of the 3 wins that season came whilst he was that week's manager

That's what I have on that season:

Football League Records.

Richardson: Played 10, Won 0, Drew 4, Lost 6, Winning percentage: 0.0%.
Cowling: Played 2, Won 0, Drew 0, Lost 2, Winning percentage: 0.0%.
Bergara: Played 6, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 4, Winning percentage: 0.0%.
Weaver & Bergara: Played 26, Won 4, Drew 2, Lost 20, Winning percentage: 15.4%.

I don't know where the 31% comes from! Kerry Dixon was in charge for the first two League games of the season, both of which were lost.

You can take your pick about which Richardson you credit with those ten games. Colin who was doing the coaching or Firestarter who was picking the team!

If Weaver and Bergara only had 26 games then they shouldn't have been on the chart as it was supposed to be for managers who had 30 games or more.

Maybe they counted the six games when Bergara was in charge against Weaver? Anyway, it would hardly improve his percentage!

I have been meaning to do some work on this so I will make a start soon!

All we can glean from this is that Soccerbase's stats for our manager win ratios are way off.

Soccerbase is a very good website for current day info on players and clubs but perhaps not on historical data for team struggling in the fourth tier.

Didn't Mickey Walker have a 100% win record for us?

Looking at DRFC fixtures when Weaver was manager/ Joint manager, he had 27 wins from 157 games, so by my reckoning 17%.

I'm sure we drew or lost to Gillingham in his second game as caretaker after DP left.

Remember tho that SO'Ds stats were predominantly in a league where we were widely acknowledged to be punching above our weight and always liable to lose more than we didn't lose!

Was it the Port Vale game where he claimed on Sky Tv that he had sent Sean Thornton to the shop to buy him some chewing gum when asked why he wasn't playing.

Loving this.

Loving the fact that SOD will return to the Keepmoat in a managerial capacity, that is. Don't think it's particularly good for us in terms of the league. There are players and staff there at Walsall that SOD has worked with before. I can see him wanting continuity and he will always add something to the game of individual players.

Personally I think its great for us. If he is true to form it will take him until next season to start doing anything with them.

Yorkie,
Sometimes you get it right and normally I would go along with that particular view but it may well be different this time and it might have something to do with ROK being a close friend. I am sure ROK will have advised and briefed him on the potential so it won't be a completely different system Sean will put in to operation.

I followed my gut feeling and put £20 on at 12-1, not a bad little earner.

Good luck Sean!

Hence my "FWIW". My main point was illustrating how win ratios are about the crappest stat in existence. It's like making a list of the best formula one drivers by order of wins

Penney had the fortune of massive investment, others managed on a shoestring, and then there are the league levels as you say, plus all manner of other factors. Yet every time we have a manager vacancy people pluck out contextless win ratios as being something to consider.

Weavers stats removed  They had him as being manager till Dec 2000!

Don't think there's enough evidence to support that statement at all. If you take on jobs that need a turnaround you can't expect instant success every time.

Walsall are different, nothing much needs changing and SOD's approach suits their style of play.
