I must say like talisker and bought a bottle of 1972 Ledaig in Tobermory
In 1993 sadly it went with the millennium. Every day stuff is Famous grouse or Johny Walker Red Label.
My Dad always had a bottle in the pantry and I used to steal a 'nip' from age about 7 till he got killed down t'pit when I was 10.

Cracking thread, this. Various malts for different moods & occasions!

For easy & relaxing quaffing I enjoy a nice, smooth Highland malt although Jura (and even better, Jura Superstition) also fit nicely.

Balvenie Double Wood is nectar and goes really well with olives IMHO.

Monkey Shoulder as recommended above is also a favourite of mine: a blend doing what blends are supposed to in the old style of the total being more than the sum of its parts.

All the Irish whiskies are very superior.  Tullamore Dew if you can find it there, or Bushmills are both favourites of mine.
Good luck.

I have tried the Irish ones but I prefer Speyside Malt above all others.

Bloody 'ell. Our lass says I spend enough on the stuff and I only buy the blended 'shite'!

This thread makes me feel like a right philistine.

Love a Talisker and had Monkey Shoulder in France with a French friend, beautiful. Also had Crown Royal,  a Canadian blend which isn't too bad for a blend. Favourite, and sorry to change the drink, but Remy Martin does it for me every time.

One of my ages old lifetime ambitions is to do the drive right around Islay, stopping off at all those lovely distilleries. Even the names make me go all introspective and girly:

Laphroaig
Lagavulin
Ardbeg
Caol Ila
Bunnahabhain
Bruichladdich
Bowmore

And the three new ones:
Kilchoman
Port Charlotte
Gartbreck

When I retire I'm definitely going up there for a week or two to sample everything :)

'Raw Spirit' by the late Iain Banks is about his search for the perfect malt. Worth a read, though I thought it tailed off towards the end - probably because of all that tasting he did!

Not a whiskey drinker myself - I'm into real ales and there are loads of those about that are worth a good shout!

Too many to name in fact. I tend to look to the ones at 5+ % because I think that to get an ale at beyond that % that actually tastes good is quite a skill!

Spirit-wise I really like bundaberg rum but that ain't the easiest drink to get your hands on over here!

I'm more into real ale than Whiskey when I'm out, but at home I prefer Whiskey.

The problem with whiskey is it's hard to know when you've had enough of it!  I could drink it until I fell over, because it doesn't give much prior warning that I've had enough. Alternatively,  drinking ale gives a fair warning that I've had enough, because long before I'm about to fall over I'm in the bogs wearing the Twyfords collar.

After several years of "suffering" bottles of Teacher's and the like from the outlaws, I found myself opening a bottle of Laphroaig from our lass and a bottle of Ardmore from her folks on Christmas Day.  Not at all unhappy about that turn of events, though I had just discovered the brain-numbing Whiskey Mac, which helps to make slightly harsher whiskeys a lot more palatable. Because whiskey needs more alcohol tipping into it... Our lass found me slumped over my keyboard on Christmas Eve thanks to a slightly aggressive round of "Look, these whiskey and ginger wines taste lovely" session after she'd left me alone to go to midnight mass...

Needless to say, the single malts have been tasted only very little over the festive season. I do look forward to giving them a proper go when I have rediscovered my whiskey legs.

Thank you Seadog. As a whisky drinker (as well as cognac), I would like to say that the post seems to be talking about single malts, so please no more whiskey!! Sorry, but it's my headteacherly side coming out where spelling is important.

Oh yes! Must admit that I normally drink - and enjoy - the Irish stuff, hence my misspelling... The Scottish stuff I normally avoid and have it stored in my cupboard.

Moses: I'd very gladly nominate you. :) How about it?  We could even drop in at the mighty Ibrox to do a little report on our recently departed talented waster and his predeccesor from the KM too.

I'm working my way through a bottle of Aberlour at the moment. Well not right now as I'm at work but y'know, it's open in the cupboard. Very smooth with a sweet finish. Lovely.

Aberlour distillery about half a mile from my house !!!!!.....but I don't touch the stuff !!

Interestingly , there was a group of Japanese chemists/scientists/whatever based in the village for a couple of months before Xmas and they were taking soil and water samples apparently for testing in the Japanese whisky industry .

Can recommend local  annual whisky festival , a chance to look around local distilleries that aren't usually open to the public .
Me , I prefer a nice glass of Cairngorm Gold ( brewed in Aviemore )

I am more a real ale man. Sadly also a bit of a quantity over quality man.
All my experiences with spirits have ended badly.
Scotland always good though especially the west. Suppose I will grow up one day.

You could do with someone who doesn't drink so they can do the driving. That rules me out, I'm afraid!

I love Grantown on Spey which is near you.
