He has lots of good things to say about the Rovers, including a hope to one day manage us

Hmmm call me cynical but is he saying the right things in case a coaching opportunity come up?

Liked his honestly about coming back for a three year deal.

DRFC Board could not have written a better script (  even eulogy) for the club.

So distance from his home wouldn't be a problem if he were the manager?

Quite an irony that.

No doubt Wellens was a pivotal part in arguably the most successful period in our history. I can imagine him being a no nonsense manager, maybe similar to our very own DF!

Brilliant interview. Richie came across really well and great to hear him speak so highly of the club.

Interesting to hear how he (and the team) knew they had the edge over Leeds before the Wembley game. I remember that feeling well, I went out with a couple of people the night before Wembley and we bought drinks and toasted promotion. Ridiculous as it sounds I just knew we'd win, we were so much better than them. That was a top top team we had, and we showed it. Great times. Richie Wellens was a big part of that.

It would be a big mistake by RW to ever take the managers job with the Rovers.
If the team had a bad run I can just imagine the abuse going his way from the idiots who booed him in his final games for us.
Some of it from the South Stand was embarrassing to listen to.

He needs to grow up a bit before he could even contemplate managing any kind of team. Somehow I can't see that happening.

He does acknowledge that he has a lot to learn. People change, give him a break.

Regarding where he lives, circumstances change. His kids might be older etc.

Good interview, thought he was a top player first time round. Didn't really work second time, but it happens. Good luck to him.

It was a good listen, that. I've always liked listening to Wellens speak as I think he comes across as an intelligent man (we've seen the proof of this on the pitch too) and he has his head screwed on straight. I can see no reason why he can't make it as a manager given time and the right tutelage.

Is he helping out at Guiseley now then? Sure I read that in the last week, where Adam Lockwood is caretaker boss or something? Could be a good grounding for the pair of them.

Imagine a management team at Rovers a few years down the line harking back to that famous Wembley side...Copps, Lockie and Richie. Surely the fans would give them some slack and the chance to build something if it came to it?

Saying Wellens needs to grow up is very disrespectful to him.
Roy Keane was a hard man and a bit of a hothead on the pitch at times but like Wellens, he had the respect of his peers.
I think RW could have the credentials to become a decent manager.
He certainly has had a good grounding.

Because he is a professional who has the respect of the people he played with.
I asked James Coppinger about his thoughts on RW a few months ago and JC was of the opinion that R W could probably make the transition into management.
I don't know how well you know Wellens but if it is not very well then to say he should grow up is a disrespectfull assumption.

I don't think anyone listening to that interview would instantly think "He needs to grow up". Sounded pretty grounded and sensible. Wish him every success.

Totally agree Hound. I somehow doubt SM knows whether or not Wellens is immature in any way, he certainly doesn't sound it when I hear him speak nor did he come across that way on the field of play either. This is all we have to go on as members of the public with no access to the man's personal life.

You mean this professional? And anybody who witnessed his behaviour, as I did, towards his fellow professionals and female attendees at the 'End of Season Dinner' a couple of years back will know exactly what I mean. There are other examples which I'd rather not go into. He may give good interviews, and he may look the part on the pitch but that's not the full story is it?

What a bas**rd he must be, making a joke in a photo. I've also seen otherwise very mature people act like idiots at a party / after a drink or five. The fact is, unless you know him personally you can't really say whether or not he is mature enough to be a football manager.

The adjectives are all yours. If you care to read my original post I suggested he needed to grow up a bit.
