If John Ryan was still at the club...
« on April 01, 2017, 05:22:01 pm by nice one rovers »
If John Ryan was still at the club, John Marquis would be getting a Bentley in a few weeks time!
Joking aside, was really worried we'd buggered it up today 'til Grimsby ran out of steam and was glad we'd paced ourselves. Glad for Andy Williams finally getting a bit of luck. Great day out!

It took the Grimsby goal to kick us into gear but after we scored we were always likely to go on and win.
I thought we were a long way from our best today on a very bobbly pitch but our finishing was superb.
Nothing lucky about Williams goal.
He turned the defender brilliantly then curled his shot into the far corner.
He actually had a very good game.
Great finish by Marquis for the third one.

Couldn't tell from my seat but Alfie celebrated as though he had got the touch.

He was hiding between the keeper and defender and brushed past him going in - possible/improbable but it was number 5.

Definitely Alfie May. It hit his head and then bounced off his shoulder. Very lucky it hit him but fair play if you're not there it can't hit you.  Quite embarrassing for their 9 foot defender being beaten by his lad

Never touched Alfie.  Keeper mis-handled it onto the backside of the defender and dropped over the line.

It's all opinions isn't it. From where I was sat (midway between corner flag and near post) it clearly came off Alfie then hit the defender on the way in.
A messy goal but definitely Alfie's.

Stood right behind the goal level with the post, the ball 🏀 hit Alfie's head and went from there off the back of the defender his goal definitely.

..so if it went in off the back of the defender how on earth can it be May's goal?

Loads of goals result from deflections, many of them actually change the direction of the ball. A prime example being the goal Sean Thornton scored against Villa.

Why are people discrediting Alfie May's goal anyway? Could it be because they fear it might give him selection preference over Andy Williams?

Does it matter who got it? what matters is we scored.

Would be nice for the lad if he is credited with it, but at the end of the day the goal is credited to Doncaster Rovers. I couldn't give a f**k if Williams or May starts so long as whoever does start does well for the team.

Why would anyone want to take it off Alfie ? It was a good game to watch even 1st half but we smashed them to bits 2nd half. RTID

Because if it was deemed to be on target when Alfie got his touch it doesn't matter if it hits a defender on its way in.
It is the attackers goal.
Watch how many goals are correctly allocated to attackers when a defender touches the ball when trying to clear it.
I think I am right in saying that Marquis'first goal hit a defenders boot on the way in.

Aye, but is it not an own goal if the deflection significantly alters the flight of the ball? Marquis' shot was heading towards that bottom corner anyway.

My understanding is that if the attackers contact sets the ball on target any deflection is not given as an og
If the ball is not heading on target but the deflection alters its direction on target then it's an og

100% correct Stockton.
Seeing as Alfie was a yard out a deflection after his touch had to be on target, unless anyone can prove differently.

I've watched this a dozen times, still none the wiser.

If I had to say, I'd say the keeper punches it on to May's head, it then hits the defender and goes in. And it wasn't going in until it hit the defender.

Or we could be in the Champions League playing to similar sized crowds to Monaco.

We will just never know

If I was Marquis I'd already have a Bentley to be honest. I wouldn't need JR to buy me one.
