St. George's Day
« on April 24, 2017, 10:42:21 am by roversdude »
Did anyone celebrate yesterday, it seems to have passed by with even less acknowledgment than usual
Why do we not celebrate the way the Welsh, Irish and Scots do ?

I considered starting a thread in celebration of the day but didn't want to encourage the inevitable accusations of being racist!

I find it strange that a Protestant country would want to celebrate their nationality with a Saints day...Saints are a Catholic concept and this country used to persecute Catholics! Odd.

Born in England and Iam English and I would never play for rep Ireland if ever asked ,would sooner slit my own throat .

You must also find it odd then Glynn that Protestant churches are all dedicated to saints as well.
Like any other part of life you can accept or adopt somebody else's views if some are similar to yours.
How much damage has been done in this country by a party taking power and writing off the opposition's previous policies almost wholesale.
A good idea is a good idea whoever comes up with it.

I only said I find it odd, I'm not trying to make anything out of it.

Why should I try and 'work out' anything about you? Does it have any impact on anybody else's perspective? Not as far as I can see, and I really don't care about your personal religious feelings.

However, now I think about it, wouldn't it be better for a National Day to be secular and more inclusive for us non-Christians? A date than was tied to something important that helped define the country like 15th June or 16th December?

I allways found it strange how untold pubs would put up the buntin for st Patrick's day and all drinkers claiming that they have a connection to olde Ireland by chucking out time > for sure for sure be Jesus me>

Then on the 23rd april no pubs doing a St. George's day celebration across the green and pleasent land  that our forefathers spilt blood for .

There aren't as many pubs celebrate St George's day, but there are a lot that still do. My mate's pub in Wroot did, for example:

Love it when people get wound up by made-up things that no one does or says.

Quite apt for a day dedicated to a bloke famous for killing a dragon, really.

Who's getting wound up? If I want to celebrate St George's day I will, and I did! It seems to me it's those against it who get wound up about those who want to celebrate it!

The only thing spoiling my St. George's day was witnessing us lose on Saturday. ☹️
Well, it didn't spoil it but did take the edge off it.

Seems to me that it's SOME of those who want to celebrate it who get wound up at people they've never encountered but have read about in the Daily Mail so they must exist somewhere who apparently take offense at it.

Shit, I'm now getting wound up at people getting wound up at people who may or may not exist.

For the record, I used to enjoy the parade when I was a young whippersnapper in the boy scouts and still enjoy seeing the spectacle if I happen to be in town when it's on. I don't actively celebrate it but I don't mind anyone else doing so.

People can celebrate whatever the f**k they like; St. George's Day, Paddy's Day, Ramadan, Eid, Christmas, The Summer Solstice, Even bloody Man Utd winning a cup if they're that way inclined so long as they aren't doing anyone else any harm. Free country, innit?

Actually, fu<k Man Utd. That one's pushing it a bit.

When I lived near Huddersfield in the late 80's I used to work in a boozer that was an absolute nightmare on St George's Day. At the time it was one of the few pubs in the area that 'celebrated' it (when I say celebrated, what that actually meant was the landlord hung a flag of St George outside the pub). Every single headcase in the town would come down and get absolutely pissed as a fart and start singing anti IRA, anti Asian and every world war 2 song that you could imagine. A girl who I worked behind the bar with once asked one of these fellas if he realised the irony of singing world war 2 songs whilst also being a fascist given that we fought world war 2 to rid Europe of fascists. After his mate explained to him what irony meant he went nuts and had to be escorted out of the pub by the bouncers (any pub that has bouncers on the door during a week day afternoon is going to be a bit naughty isn't it?)

Funnily enough, the landlord and landlady of the pub were never around to work St Georges day, they only turned up at closing time to collect their huge profits.

And this is the reason why I don't go out and celebrate it. Be proud of your country, be proud of your heritage and celebrate, but why the need to get completely w**kered and shout/sing b*llocks at every other nation/race with a weird football chant?

Funny this 'be proud of your country' stuff. Like why? Why should I be proud of an accident that meant my Mum happened to be in England the time I sprang forth? Why should I be proud of a nation of xenophobics? Why should I be proud of a nation that tolerates the spastics at the Fa, the Premier League and encourages the untold, unaccountable and manipulative power of Sky? Why should I be proud of a nation that encourages the Daily Mail and the Sun? Boris bloody Johnson and 2 evil women? Why should I be proud of a nation that lives in the past, has delusions of grandeur and can't face its own mediocrity?

Cool. How many 'Angry of Tunbridge Wells' will that bring forth?

Talking of living in the past, nice use of the deeply offensive and thoroughly outdated term 'spastic'.
