Andy Butler
« on January 20, 2018, 09:34:19 pm by Drfc1996 »
Out of contract at the end of the season and will be up there with our highest earners. I’d say it’s more or less guaranteed we will keep him. But is that the right choice?

No doubt he’s a good player and his commitment to the club and community is unquestionable but is he worth the wages? Potentially could make two good signings with his wages gone. Already have Baudrey and Wright so do we need him?

Or am I out of my mind suggesting we release our captain who will be hugely influential off the field as well as being a good player on it.

You don’t know how much he earns ad you don’t know how much we’d offer / what he’d accept to stay at his home town club.

Complete guess work.

We would have lost a lot more games this season had we not had Butler in the team.
No question, we should have him here next season.

He isn’t our team captain by the way.

Well considering we don’t know facts about most things discussed we may as we’ll come close down this forum then if you’re suggesting we can debate opinions based on guess work?

Isn’t he club captain? So does more of the off the field/community work?

Either way I’d guess he’s an influential member of the squad.

Agree with you we’d have lost points without him.

Honestly I’m undecided at the moment but I’d more be swung towards keeping him. But I’ve seen comments for reasons to let him go and can see that argument

Got to keep him based on his consistency this season.
You don’t get rid of your best players if you can avoid it.
He has unquestionably been one of our best players this season.
Good for at least one more season.

Next season it has to be Butler and Baudry they are immense for us this season, Wright is a good stand in but it has to be them 2

Doesn't matter his age if he's fit enough and good enough he should stay and play. Dumb to let him go because he's getting older, despite having his best season with us.

Without a doubt keep him. Good experienced head who rarely gets injured despite his age. Another year in him at this level at the very least.

I too think that him and Baudry are our best pairing by a mile. I actually think that when fit, Baudry is a class act. Keeping him fit is the problem though.

Just because you don't want to use a forum without spurious threads based on pure guesswork doesn't mean it should be shut down so that people who do can't use it.

ANDY Butler has been the only player to keep his form since joining Rovers . His natural reading of the game has saved and earned numerous points for the team, Butler will be missed if his injury is long term one , so it’s to be hoped DF has and iron  in the fire For Tuesday and gets a useful loan in or his absence will be costly.

He is indeed club captain, Copps is captain on the pitch.

I'd keep him without question. He has been our best player this season and is such an integral part of the squad, also he's a great guy and does a lot to help our standing in the local community. We could do with a few more like him!

I sincerely hope butler isn’t badly injured. He’s been our most consistent player/leader and without a doubt we would not be in such a positive position if it was not for his solid contribution this season!!

I would keep him. He adds experience in a youngish squad. Even if he wasn't first choice I could see him being useful around the dressing room.

On top of that, he has looked good.

If he just asking if we should keep Andy Butler I'd agree, but wrapping it all up in complete guesswork about the money involved isn't fair; not least to Andy Butler himself.

You dont get rid of your best players unless you can get someone better. And you wont get anyone better than AB for half his wages!

If he's fit and the money side makes sense for the club then why wouldn't we keep him a bit longer? Does he fancy coaching and management later? If so I'd love to see a local hero do that for us.

As an aside I don't get this club captain/team captain nonsense. What is the precise difference?
There should be one captain only. So if it's Copps then AB is vice-captain. Is that what it means anyway in practice?

Effectively. Butler always seems to get the armband when Coppinger isn't on the pitch.

I thought he would really struggle this season with how he performed last time round in league one but he's had a cracking season and deserves another year.

As an oldie I have to say don't judge the number of years look at the physical capabilities and mental agility . Moreover he plays in a position where strength , heading ability and toughness are paramount .DF will extend his contract .
I don't think Butler wishes to retire as Copps seems to do and that will weigh in DF's thinking too.

DRFC1996 is also right when he says that most of the financial stuff that is discussed on here is based on guesswork.

Why is it nonsense? It seems pretty straight-forward to me and not exactly complicated. They are both leaders in the squad, Copps is in charge on the field followed by Butler, then off-field Butler heads up stuff like community activities by players and that sort of thing.
