Tour de Yorkshire

Bloody nuisance. Spend a day at work and then you can't get home for a bunch of blokes going for a bike ride!

It's been a constant moan for me all week. I couldn't get off my sodding road for the school run this morning. Add to that the council have managed to find street cleaners again and changed the flowers right down the Bennetthorpe stretch where they'll be left to their own devices till the St Leger comes round again. All for a few hundred people at the end. Madness.

I saw the street sweepers near Cantley lights this morning and had to laugh. The rest of the year the council leave rubbish strewn everywhere. I can't believe the amount of roads on this route which are closed in the rush hour. I'm sorry for working for a living. If a football match caused this much disruption there would be hell on!

Womens race came through Stainy this morning, and I kid you not there were about 70 Police motorbikes coming through just before the bike riders. Now I know Stainy has a reputation, but the whole police force really have to turn out

Whats wrong with you! We should be supporting and celebrating events like this in our town, The event was beamed around the world, including our town, only helps to make a bigger name for Doncaster.

Great event, I've had a nice day and hope it comes back to Donny again in subsequent years.

I was talking to one of the stewards this morning and she said 2020 is going to be big for Doncaster in the cycling world, she never elaborated though

Doncaster is down to be a start town for one of the events in the 2019 Road World Championship, which is a pretty big deal - maybe she got mixed up with that?

There were some great pictures of the area on the live tv coverage, a fantastic finish (won by a Yorkshireman) and amazing crowds for what is after all a third division bike race. It must be one of the top 5 - certainly top 10 - watched races in the world.

Plus you get to annoy local motorists for a day, whats not to like!!!

We had a great day, family round to see the two races with us and a BBQ in the garden and a few beers in between them.

What the hell is up with some of you.....whinge f**king whinge .
We get a new airport - whinge whinge whinge
We get a new stadium - whinge whinge whinge
We get a new shopping centre - whinge whinge whinge
EVERYTHING that this town does to improve itself and all we get is WHINGE WHINGE WHINGE  !!

No wonder we struggle for outside investors , infrastructure, retailers . All my life I have seen this town become cleaner, richer, better .

Imagine what we could have done without this stupid attitude. We are NEVER  happy except when we live in the dirty, grim, grey past. Some towns would die for what we have .

Went to a pub to watch in a nearby village. I'm not sure what an average Thursday teatime is like in Fishlake, but pubs and cafes were busy, families were out and about and TV viewers could see the area in a great light, multiply that across the whole event and its got to be worth a bit of short term inconvenience

 :that:

Watched at Green Tree where there were Bouncy Castles and Face Painters and other such stuff. Pub were doing well and there were hundreds there on the corner

Went into Hatfield as soon as Race passed where Bay Horse Blue Bell Ingram and the new (recommended) Micro Pub Jack Hawley at The Grange were all doing well

So lots of short term effect but with the Helicopter coverage and almost the whole Race showed on Telly and most places looking well there has to be a "bounce" which would perhaps benefit lots of us in the long run

There has to be, I've not been in hare and hounds for years, but it looks really nice inside and has a good food and drink offer so will go back with Mrs TFE. My mum and dad, both retired with no interest really in the sport itself simply watched on TV for ideas on where to visit next and enjoy the scenery, so Yorkshire gets a 4 day TV advert too. It's a good job some can see past end of their drive for the day or we'd have nothing

An average teatime in Fishlake everyday = Sleepy Hollow 😀

I'm guessing the OP had his tongue slightly in his cheek, but don't forget either that Donny isn't his town.

It's probably a bit of jealousy.
I mean, 'Tour de Millwall' doesn't really inspire, does it?

 ;)

I'm assuming the op lives the Isle of Axholme way out and is whinging about not being able to go down Cantley Road home, if he used his common sense he could have gone down Great Yorkshire Way from the motorway, through rosso, do a right just past the church, brings you out where the camping place is, go down the road Bawtry end of the airport, turn left at the roundabout to Finningly, do a right at the 90 degree bend in Finningly signposted Wroot, brings you out on the road to Westwoodside, and you've avoided the bike race alltogether 😜

And it would have took ages like my drive home from work did as most used m18 j3 backing it right back to the m180.  I love that the race came through so no complaints It's only one day.

Granted not sure a finish between 5-6 was the best timing but lots seamt to enjoy it.

The only problem I have with this event is the huge number of mamils you see around, middle aged men in Lycra. Some of these people should know better!

Looking at the council map it showed the end of the Great Yorkshire Way as closed by the Hare and Tortoise. I ended up going down the A1 then through Bawtry and Misson to Westwoodside, a usual 13 miles journey doubled in distance. Look i'm not saying don't have these events but road closures between 5 and 6pm on a week day are ludicrous. It should have all been wrapped up before the rush hour so save the inconvenience to workers.

You did n't have to go to the end of Great Yorkshire way, you take a right at the first roundabout takes you through Rosso where the Pit used to be, go over the crossings in Rosso, straight on at the roundabout where the Styrupp is, past the church and then do a right turn (avoiding parrots corner), brings you out on the Great North Road near that camping store, go right down Great North Road past Mount Pleasant and then do a left south side of the airport, brings you to the roundabout at Austerfield and a left there into Finningly

... and now Conisbrough Castle featuring PROMINENTLY

Helicopter covered it as the Riders went round but then double back - showed it in all its splendour and then zoomed in on the giant Welcome to Doncaster Banner which had been positioned inside the Keep of the Castle just for that eventuality

OK its not exactly free Publicity but it will stick in some peoples memories !

Well I've learnt something new. I didn't know that first roundabout went anywhere, I thought it was something to do with amazon.
In answer to the other chap it was nothing to do with jealousy as I was born in Doncaster myself.
