Billy Sharp
« on December 27, 2018, 09:32:39 am by Chris Black come back »
Yes I know he does not play for us but I am posting this anyway.

You cannot keep a good man down. He will be 33 in February but this season he is easily on course to deliver his best ever return in the Championship.

After scoring at weekend he is on 13 goals in Championship (zero penalties) and needs only six more to match his record of 19 in 2011/12 for us / Southampton.

Guess it shows that you don’t necessarily need pace or endless skill or to be a false number nine or whatever - a fat lad with a nose for a goal still has a place at the top table.

Some players like Sharpy are blessed with natural instinct to be in the most effective goal scoring position - you’ve either got it or you haven’t Billy has it - Lineker had it. Different level but same principle

We have one of those in the youth team. 19 in 15 games so far this season.

Why shouldn’t we have a thread about Sharp.
We have threads about other players who won’t be playing for us again.

Billy has that gift of being in the right place at the right time, a natural finisher.

He’s the best striker I’ve seen play for the Rovers. He’s also an absolutely lovely fella and still has a bit of a soft spot for us

Loved Sharp when we had him. I remember wanting him before we signed him on loan. I spoke to okelly when he signed and he said he will score for fun for us. He wasn't wrong. We didn't have  him long but he's in the legend category for me.

Fat lads do quite well up front, ask Akinfenwa or John Parkin.

Despite his reputation and long career scoring goals at a good level, I think Sharp somehow is still under-rated. Always written off, always out to prove the doubters wrong. It's one of the things that made him a perfect fit for Doncaster Rovers when he arrived.

He's brilliant, I will always consider him a Rovers great and I hope Sheffield United go up this season off the back of his goals.

The sad thing is though, if they do go up, Billy will be back in the Championship with another club.

That's the point. 21st century football.

He's glorious at the second level. But never quite had what it takes for the step up.

A player of his ability, 35 years ago, would've been a top striker at the very highest level. UEFA Cup winning material. But not in today's global market. Not quite.

I admit I thought he was on the way down. That combined with the pretty intense way that the Blades play, I thought he might struggle. Fair f**ks to him.

He's the top scoring Englishman since the turn of the Millennium. Not Rooney, Not Owen, Not Kane. Sharp. Top bloke as well.

such a shame people with natural instinct to be in the right place at the right time were called "goal laggers" when Coleman was a lad

Some great comments here folks. Having watched him at Donny and now his third spell with us, I'll say he's right up there with our top strikers that I've ever seen (Sir Brian Deane included). His first spell was really early in his career when he was just setting out. His second played largely under Kevin Blackwell. That wasn't great due to the football we were playing, that didn't suit him. This time - well to be honest I didn't think he, or some others, would cope with the pace of the game we play now.  He's a revelation. Never gives up, proud to be a Blade and captain and we love him to bits for it. His second yesterday - ball over the top, battling with defenders, watching the ball all the way then slotting it into the corner. I sit on the kop and I'm sure he winked at me as he slid it past the keeper 😂.
There's some players that you know you are blessed to be watching. Billy is one - and the best thing is that he looks genuinely happy doing what he does.
This football lark  is pretty good at times ..... what a player he is!

Let’s hope the blades go up and we go up and. They let him go.  He can then form a formidable partnership with JM

I hope they go up and he gets his chance in the PL at last. The only club who'll ever give him it is Sheff Utd, and it's not exactly served the likes of Glenn Murray badly when they've been given the chance late in their career.

Aye, go on. We'll keep turning out great strikers and letting them finish off their careers with you lot once we've done with them.

I actually thought we’d got a bargain with Brian Deane. Shows what I know...

Whiteman is a class player, one that I think Sheffield United may regret letting go. He’s been superb for us this season.

Sharp is a great striker, the best I’ve ever seen in a Rovers shirt. In his first spell you had a feeling he’d score every time he pulled the shirt on. He has the instinct that cannot be taught, and the attitude to match. The Blades are very obviously his club, but the application he shows isn’t limited to them. He gave everything for us and was a big part of the club on and off the pitch. His all round game is also very underrated in my opinion. He held the ball up and linked the play very effectively in the best footballing team we’ve ever had.

You're probably going to regret letting Whiteman go in the end, to be honest.

Alcock...yeah not so much.

Don’t forget our other cast offs in their squad, Mark Duffy, Enda Stevens and John Lundstrum

Goal scored by Billy making him the highest scorer in the English Football league this century. Legendary status achieved.
Cracking results for both of us today too 👍

Gotta love Billy Sharp!!! My son thinks he’s awesome. A mate of mine who unfortunately follows Leeds didn’t rate him and said to me last year he wouldn’t make double figures this season. Wow !! It’s great to say i told you so 😂
