Wouldn't it be nice...
« on December 17, 2019, 02:04:47 pm by Axholme Lion »
...if after the last three years that people could finally put the opinions on both sides of Brexit and the election to bed and finally start to come together for the good of the country. In all votes there will be a winner and a loser. It would be good for the winners not to gloat and to use their position of power to do the best for one and all in our nation, I would hope to see more investment in the future of the north. Also it would be nice for the losers to graciously accept defeat and not to keep raking over the coals of the past so we can all move on together.

Nice thoughts AL, but the moment Johnson put No Deal back on the table all bets are off.

I think he has to put it back on the table in order to negotiate from a position of strength in order to get the best deal possible from the Europeans. This is where the UK went wrong in the past by saying we would not just walk away. It's bound to focus their minds more to make them more reasonable to our requirements.

The issue is that the EU want no backsliding on current standards  in order to agree a deal on terms similar to those at the moment.

The US require exactly the opposite....free market access to UK goods and services, with regulatory reform.

Very difficult to see how you can have both, so one will be downgraded against the other.

Johnson will blame the EU and default to "no deal" in December 2020, leaving on WTO rules in future.
This will massively impact UK manufacturing, much of which will relocate to the EU proper.

At the same time, an economic downturn is brewing and will cascade through the UK economy.
Johnson has zero understanding of the economic system, and does not care other than for the political outfall.

All looking good, eh!

It will not die down for a while yet. The losers have took  three and a half years to come to terms with their first loss up to press, they have got to find something else to crow about yet.
Not an easy thing to do when you haven't a lot else to do with your time.

IF it works, and it's a big IF.  But if it fails he has left himself nowhere to go - and that would be disastrous for the country.  One of the principal rules in negotiations is 'never threaten to do something you know will hurt you if it has to be done, without a way out'.  And I've conducted a very large number of successful negotiations over the years.

Well I hope everyone can get behind the negotiations of the Government. Regardless of personal political preferences what is done is done and we should all hope for the best outcome for Britain. Had Labour won the election I would have hoped that they would have done the best for us all and would have wished them well in their efforts.

At the end of the day, had the referendum outcome been to remain then we wouldn’t have had to be discussing this subject.
On the home political scene I don’t think there is a snowball in hells chance of the other Parties supporting the government through the Brexit negotiations.
Point scoring opportunities are to be had.

If the opposition parties had been more supportive in the past couple of years maybe they would have done better in the general election, rather than being perceived as obstructive.

Taking no deal off the table in the first place was like playing cards and showing the other players what cards you’re holding. Not very cleverly and bound to make you lose money

Agreed.  But it will need Johnson to take a more conciliatory stance at home in the UK; which, sadly, I don't think Cummings will allow him to do.

What about the 'wonderful' deal he's already got that he was pissed off about Parliament wanting time to scrutise?

If I remember rightly, you were wanting everybody to get behind that one as well.

Perhaps we could arrange a Remainers v Leavers Christmas day football match reminiscent of the WW1 England/Germany Christmas day truce in 1914.

Just to appease the Remainers, in the event of a Leave win we could re-play the game on Boxing day.

All us remoaners will just wait 20+ years like those who lost the first EU referendum in 1975 and never "got over it"

And threatening the EU with no deal is like promising someone you will shoot yourself in the head before shooting them

Suppose it all depends on whether each team could get 11players per team before they change their minds as to which side they want to be on ...…………… oh sorry forgot it's only MPs who are allowed to change their mind not the great unwashed public

But if the soldiers had done what they signed up for there would not have been a truce.

The high command tried to ban it in 1914 and issued orders for court martial of any soldier declaring a truce in 1915.

Which is a great example of the type of movement that encompasses a 'people's vote'. Ordinary people disobeying the orders of their superiors who don't want them to think for themselves but do only what they tell them.

Actually the the last line does make the question. If Boris did Get Brexit Done and it was a complete disaster, would you still vote for him anyway or would you realise he's led you down the garden path and reject him?

There is a good chance that the EU will be a lot weaker by 2024, Holland has a good chance of becoming Europes Mexico, with a massive drug problem, Germany's automobile industry will come in for increasing pressure from China and the far east in particular, and the Mediterranean countries will still be behind the northern countries.
Poland will become more troublesome as they move from money receivers to actually putting money into the coffers, and the eastern members continue to resist accepting economic refugees, and France's main markets in the Middle East either become more troublesome, or more self sufficient themselves.
