Capital cities
« on May 08, 2020, 01:16:45 pm by BillyStubbsTears »
Seen a thing going on on Twitter asking how many capital cities you have visited. Here's my list (I think)

London
Reykjavik
Brussels
Amsterdam
Copenhagen
Oslo
Stockholm
Helsinki (*)
Berlin
Warsaw
Budapest
Prague
Vienna (*)
Paris
Luxembourg
Monaco
Bern
Rome
San Marino
Valletta
Ljubljana
Zagreb
Belgrade
Skopje
Athens
Nicosia
Cape Town
Abu Dhabi
Male'
Colombo (or Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte as it is called now) (*)
Singapore
Kuala Lumpur
Beijing

(*) Transit at airport so doesn't really count.

Surprised at the close European ones I've never been to:
Dublin
Madrid
Lisbon

Forget Dublin and Madrid, disappointing for me. However, Lisbon should be a priority for you in about 10 years when we can travel freely again.

Given that I'm half Irish by heritage, I'm amazed that I've got this old and never visited the place. Just to have been there.

Aren't Colombo and Sri Jaywardenepura two different places but both capitals of Sri Lanka? Similar to South Africa having three capitals, Pretoria, Cape Town and Jo'burg.

My list I think:

London (do we count Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast as well?)
Dublin
Oslo
Copenhagen
Amsterdam (amazed it actually is the capital when the parliament is in The Hague, one of very few such cases)
Brussels
Paris
Luxembourg
Bonn (when it was the capital, have never been to Berlin)
Madrid
Lisbon
Athens
Rome
Warsaw
Budapest
Sofia
Bucharest
Vienna
Canberra
Auckland
Singapore
Hong Kong
Suva (Fiji)
Washington DC
Ottawa
Mexico City

Also only at the airport in Bangkok and Bahrain/Manama

Like BST, surprised not to have been to Stockholm, Berlin, Ankara, Prague and Bratislava

Edit:
Worst/Least interesting - Canberra
Best/Most interesting - Rome, Vienna and Paris

Some quite massive carbon footprints here. In all seriousness, I don't think in future people can be travelling as much as this.

Still. What lovely weather we are having. April was another record breaker.

Oh is that right? I'd assumed Colombo had just changed its name.

That's it.

I have travelled further afield but not visited the capital city. I also took a decision to really limit the amount I fly. I don't like flying and I don't think it's the right thing to do now anyway. I think I've flown a return journey only once in the last ten years, aided by the fact that I've never worked for a business that has required me to travel. Though once I had a manager who gave me a talking to for not taking foreign holidays because it was "important to broaden my horizons and experience other countries". The daft t**t.

I don't want to list how many times I've been to each place nor to where I visited without going to the capitals I'm in too much trouble with a carbon footprint bigger than bigfoot but there was a bit of business travel quite a bit of hitchhiking and lots of ferries trains and buses. The cheaper you travel the more local people you meet.

I often think about the kindness of strangers when I've travelled and can remember faces and meals with them from decades ago, I think about that a lot now I'm better off. When I was fairly young and quite far from home I was told I was rich by one of the guys looking after us, it took me a while to realise that he meant white with a british passport, I was fairly broke at the time.

Gibraltar ?? ....

lol - desperation probably !

I used Wikipedia as an aide memoire and there was Gibraltar capital of Gibraltar " a British Overseas Territory" so I took it

You were probably laughing that much you missed my Douglas I-O-M and St Peter Port Guernsey "British Crown Dependencies" - and for me literally "any port in a storm" on my way to 20

I would give the all up though for a visit to Edinburgh of the Seven Seas (Tristan da Cuhna) or my favourite Flying Fish Cove the Capital of Christmas Island ! I will just have to picture that but how good it sounds
