Coldplay mixed news.

They are finally going to end the misery that is their interpretation of music in 2025.
But they still intend to tour.

Coldplay's music is both very good and original.

Unfortunately, the very good bits aren't original and the original bits aren't very good.

I’ve known many bands in my life and I can honestly say Coldplay are one of them.

Some of their early stuff I loved, so much I've seen then 9 or 10 times live and they are great live.  Their recent album was really poor though, they should have stopped a fair while ago now. But still, sell out stadiums.

I didn't mind Yellow when I first heard it. Was it their first single?

Then they largely passed me by, saw them perform on Jools Holland or something not terrible then they caught my attention with a hopeless Kraftwerk cover.

It was about that time they wanted to do something with Bowie but he told them it was rubbish.

For me they are professional but average, not as good as the likes of say U2 or Blur. Which isn't that high a bar.

It wasn't a cover of Computer Love though RD. They just copied the main hook line note for note.

Yeah, I saw Martin making a big thing out of his love of Kraftwerk. Then I heard the song and thought, you really haven't grasped what they are about.

I don’t have a fave band to be fair.
There are a number of groups that mean a lot to me for various reasons.

The Jam.
Big country and The Skids of course.
The Alarm.
Runrig.
To name but a few.

I’m not a fan of groups that plagerize other songs. Viva la Vida was a rip from a Joe Satriani song. Chris Martin doesn’t sing, he whines. Depressing stuff. They also rip-off Radiohead, who are much much better.they are as dull as Ariana Grande. I’d agree their early stuff was ok, but after album 3 or 4 they turned into utter pop garbage.

I could list five favourite artists today but it would be different tomorrow.

My favourites usually come from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

I was born in the late 70s so I'm not just picking acts from my era. i don't think music is such a central cultural thing these days, though I do think there are artists still doing great things today.

Edit: I think The Beatles are over rated. Herrassay!

Because, though they were very proficient and could always write a good song... They didn't really push the barriers that much. Not really.

My youngest was listening to Adele the other day.
I told him to listen to Alison Moyet instead, who he had never heard of.
He has now downloaded the album Alf. He admit’s she is much better.

Music is no different to many things in respect of some people thinking if you don't like what they like you're wrong.

Quite sad really.

Rammstein and Gojira are superb.

My favourite bands old and new are Tool, Sepultura, Iliketrains, Stone Temple Pilots, Slayer, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Deftones, Coheed & Cambria amongst others.

Coldplay are typical of one of those bands who arrive on the scene as relative unknowns, produce a really good, solid, innovative debut album and then gradually become utterly dire mainstream dirge.

Their first album Parachutes was actually pretty decent for the genre with some melodic and melancholic tracks chucked in there but Coldplay became unlistenable after that bar a few tracks from their next album.

Radiohead similar. Pablo Honey was solid indie fayre, likewise The Bends but then they just got weird. Kid A wasn't bad even allowing for that change in sound but can't listen to any other Radiohead stuff after that.

Anyone who likes Rammstein should give Laibach a go. If only because they came up with one of the greatest put downs of all time when an interviewer asked them about the idea that they influenced Rammstein.

"We’ve explained that already many times and we can only repeat our statement here again;  Rammstein are Laibach for adolescents and Laibach are Rammstein for grown ups."

I'll have to look them up BST as not heard of them.

I don't generally like the industrial metal sound like NIN etc and what Rammstein sometimes knock out but some of the chugs in Rammstein songs are what saves them from being mediocre.

Laibach's underlying theme is the link between innocent pop music and fascism. They have a string of cover versions where they have turned pop songs into terrifying Wagnerian fascist anthems.

Geburt Einer Nation is both hilarious and blood chilling. A cover of Queen's One Vision, sung in German in a bass baritone voice by a singer dressed in militaristic outfits. Puts "One flesh, one bone, one true religion" sung like that is horrifying.

Their cover of Get Back by the Beatles sung like that puts a whole different take on "Get back to where you once belonged".

They aren't fascists. They make people reflect on how those attitudes can be unconsciously fostered. Coming from the ex Yugoslavia where right wing populists whipped up people into a civil war makes it very poignant.

But if that's too much like hard work, their cover of Rammstein's Ohne Dich is one of the most beautiful works of chilling art in music.

The original is OK but it's a bog standard melancholy male rock love song. "Without you the birds don't sing, the seconds feel like hours ".

In Laibach's version, the lead singer is Mina Spiler who has the most achingly gorgeous female soprano voice. It's elegant and fragile.

Then the male singet comes in with his terrifying bass voice. As she sings "Ohne Dich" (without you), he sings over it in a whispered growl "Ohne Mich" (without me). f**king genius.

Just listened to Laibach's Ohne Dich on YouTube.
Never heard of them, being musically stuck in the 1970s, but Wow that was beautiful and unsettling in equal parts.

Do you mean a bit like the Fun Boy Three featuring Bananarama?

Laibach are indeed brilliant.  First came across them on an episode of The Tube.  Their recent cover of the Sound of Music soundtrack is chilling.

They've never been and never will be cool but for those not familiar with Marillion go check them out, especially live versions of Neverland, The Space and the album FEAR. Fantastic musicians with a brilliant front man.
P.s they're not an 80's nostalgia band!!
