Minute Cryptic
« on July 10, 2024, 01:55:20 pm by Mike_F »
Anyone else discovered this game?

I've always been rubbish at figuring out cryptic crossword clues but the ones on here are usually quite simple. If anyone else wants to get involved in a thread similar to the Wordle one, post up your daily scores here.

1 guess, 1 under par today for me.

Thanks Mike. I do cryptic crosswords. At least one a week. Shows me my brain is still working properly!
Did this one, very easy, same score as you.

Same here tommy, until recently it was a weekly ritual of mine to tackle the Yorkshire Post cryptic crossword on a Sunday night.
Like you, I tell myself it keeps my brain active!

I got this one quickly too, same score as you and Mike.

Thanks for sharing by the way Mike.

Mentioned this before.
My dad who left school at 14 and spent his entire working life down the pit, could complete the Times Cryptic crossword in half an hour.
Miles better than me at them.

He should have been digging for coal, not doing the crossword.

No wonder the bloody pits shut!

He started at Bentley pit in 1931 BB, replacing one of those who were killed in the disaster.
One of whom was Kate Atkinson’s grandad, who is one of my favourite authors.
Life after Life, Behind the Scenes at the Musuem, the Jackson Brodie series.

Seriously did he actually buy a newspaper ? Probably on a Saturday only.

Until 1966 that paper was so tight they had bl00dy adverts on the front page

"Makeup and editorial changes were introduced to make the paper livelier and more interesting. News was put permanently on its front page in 1966 in place of advertisements."

Must admit I got it based on the definition today and made some of the wordplay fit enough to have a guess. I had to watch the explainer vid to see why it was right!

I will have a go at these. I've frustratingly never got my head round cryptic crosswords (my brain is too logical and not abstract enough!) so welcome the challenge

I had no idea for 25 years what " dog with distemper returns with a North Sea trawler" even meant. They all seemed to be like that

I looked at them from time before thinking wtf ?

Then a few years back Steve Pemberton the actor was on Telly and was a genius at Cryptics and explained how they worked. He explained how to solve them and I started doing the Thorne Times one.

My percentages grew issue by issue and it deffo helps when you've done a few compiled by the same person. Within a few issues I was getting the lot , sometimes without knowing how then of course they stopped the Cryptic one and I haven't done one since

So rusty I will be but how / where can I find this pls

I keep getting a Forum dedicated to it but not the Comp itself but will keep trying

I took 2 letters as it's been ages since I did one and then I "saw" the word

I had no idea why it was right and watched the YouTube explanation and thought wow how contrived was that

Like many a Purple in Connections I would NEVER have got that

For the record I got even par which I know must be next door to stupid .... and it took more than a minute

Took me a while today. I had to click on hint to see which word was the definition then it all became clear.

1 guess, 1 under par but needed that hint!

ok since i have the intelligenzzias attention

I have always nicknamed Molyneux Molybendium as in Molybdenum well he does bend the ball  (one of his goals was better than that 16 year old Spanish Onions goal)

Accordingly which Rovers player relates to Antinomy  ??? AND WHY ??

BST knows the answer for sure

Yesterday I had to take 3 letters . In a 5 letter word that's Harry Worley style  "poor"

Today was so easy I expected to be wrong and I was 1 under par. I've noticed some people get 2 under par but is that for longer words ?

Guess the 2 under must be for longer words or perhaps more complicated clues.

Agreed, today's was almost too easy! Got it in one.

This Quiz has gone down like a lead balloon (Antinomy is found with lead by the way)

the player in question is a current member of the squad so it can't be that hard for the genii on here

Nobody is bothered about your question, so leave the thread to we happy few who spend all our spare time trying to solve various word puzzles and are proud of it.

Chill out man and concentrate if you can on the 'king question. The answer is in the list of current players at the club. A clue how to solve the question is to take each players name and delete the names that you think don't relate to Antinomy and go from there.

In case you haven't realised it relates to our club - so by definition it has merit even though the thread is posted in the off topic section for the benefit of the  "so called intelligentizzia-  try and keep your personal problems (if any) off the thread - thank you

Really struggled with today's and ended up getting a few letters to help. 2 over par.
