McCann loves a big target man with two wide forwards to support , the lack of options last season out wide and up top cost us 20/30 goals last season - he needs more options and to be more fluid with formations up top as well as defensively but he does love 4-3-3 you’ve got to have the personnel to suit

I find it difficult to understand why all season we have had a fox in the box but didn't play a system that got the ball in there early, and didn't pick him for long periods of the season saying he couldn't play the lone striker role.
Then we give him the boot but pick him for the last game and feed him the ball in box to give him a send off and he obliges with a hat trick.
Just what and who has been doing things wrong all season.
Just wondering and a little confused.

Agree on not putting service into the striker but let’s be honest if every team we played defended like Posh did we’d finish with 100pts. Don’t read too much into that game.

Magennis leaving Exeter.

The way McCann said “great character” was like he knew him. He always preferred him over Eaves to start.

9 in 48 last term... although I don't know how involved he was generally...
I looked on the Exeter forum and they seem to generally like him as a player/personality.

Not sure if he is what we need - but we may be looking in the right areas....

Why would we want either 35 or 34 year old forward. Magennis played 12 league games Eaves played 25 Yes we had Billy at 40 but he was different to both of them. If Grant wants playoffs then neither is one of the strikers we need.

Would be an abysmal signing. There is more to his game than goals admittedly but, his return throughout his career has been poor.

The had one good scoring season in his career when he had the likes of Wilks, Honeyman and Lewis-Potter feeding him playing in the best team in the league.

It may not eventually be him but McCann signing players from memory isn’t the optimal strategy is it.

Good question .. but I think the answer of the last game  laid in the hands of Peterborough who just didn’t try a leg ..

I’d would say Eaves or Magennis, both previous played under McCann
Well if that’s the only choice , then there’s no wonder their trying to recruit an analytics consultant. The scouting is now down to iPad !!

Every manager signs players they’ve managed before, just like any business, bosses set on people they know.
How many of those on here have got jobs with the old saying “ It’s not what you know, it’s who you know “

The official rovers Instagram story has a picture of a hook (pirate hook type) and the eyes emoji.

Given Grant talked about a new striker I’m assuming it’s a clue? Only striker that came to mind for me was Andy Cook, also fits the experience and goals clue, but I could be way off.

Not sure we cross the ball enough for him so if it is that’d have to change.

Neither he, nor the interviewer mentioned striker when McCann was asked to describe one of the players we were talking to.

Only on the basis of McCann saying "Can score goals" has this thread evolved assuming he was referring to a new striker.

Reading some of the above posts, just because one of our targets is described as experienced and a character, a number of posters have assumed our entire recruitment strategy hasn't moved on and is still poor???  Yet, in another thread, folk are putting a price on in demand Bailey.

I guess the first signing we do get confirmed will give us a big clue on the direction we’re heading in recruitment wise.

I disagree, we can’t really tell until we have made several signings.

By your theory, if the first player coming in is primarily a bit part squad player rather than a “statement” signing, the forum will go into meltdown saying the recruitment is crap.  We all know how it works on here.!!

When it comes to strikers it is going to be very hard to not get better than what are here at the moment.

Not sure why there’s 4 pages of people getting their knickers in a twist over a signing we haven’t made yet

Funny watching isn't it.

We will end up at the Byrne situation, where who ever we sign is apparently rubbish before he kicks a ball.

Byrne was an interesting one. Certainly steady but no better than Pearson and Grehan during the run in. Would be a poor signing if we try and take him permanently.

I think Byrne was better than the fans had expected but he certainly wasn't miles ahead of what we already have. In fact none of the strikers mentioned are going to massively improve our options from this season. Let's just wait and see what we get.

Maybe McCann is  hoping we come up with suggestions as his recent attempts have been lacking in goals ..

Seering as back to the future is the "zeitgeist", I do love using pretentious words,  perhaps we could bring back James Hayter?

Can't believe he's worse than Tom Eaves.

A good character and can score goals.... occasionally.

Perfect for McCann.

Wouldn’t be the best business, but I think he’d suit us more than Sharp did as a back up striker.

Remember Biamou hadn’t played for 18 months and came in and fitted us like a glove because he was right for the system.

Would personally look at Mikael Mandron as a back up striker. Think he has a lot of what McCann likes. I rated him at Crewe and is out of contract at St Mirren.

I think Byrne has been very good for us since signing, since signing we have been in promotion form, and he’s definitely contributed to that
