If Sharp goes who would you like?
« on April 07, 2010, 05:22:21 pm by Poshrover »
If/when Billy goes who would you like to bring in to Rovers to replace him within our budget?

I have seen Craig Mackail-Smith quite a few times and I think he is a SOD type player. He is energetic,a great team player with loads of movement and  gives 100% week after week. He may fancy another crack in the Championship and he should be within budget. He is not a tall striker but leads the line well.

If we wanted a tall striker Liam Dickinson is a player that I rate but I am not sure of his personality. He has had more clubs than Arnold Player but he is still quite young and could be improved with coaching by SOD and ROK.

Any other suggestions?

Would you say Le Fondre of Rovrum is a similar type of player to Sharp, and would fit in in his place and perhaps be worth looking at?

Not sure of a specific person yet, but if we did get someone new I would like him to be a similar player to sharpy, i.e strong, feared by defenders, keeps the ball well etc

Ched Evans (season loan)?

Why waste cash on ridiculous transfer fees when the season ticket holders at Bramall Lane can do it for us.

plymouths brad wright phillips or the other lad who played up front with him ,thought there both had good movement which would  fit into  our style of play

Mackie is a good shout as is Fallon, not convinced on Wright-Phillips though.

One that there has been a hint of is Brett Pitman.  Rumoured we've looked at him and Hayter was singing his praises the other week aswell.  Wouldn't surprise me.  That Le Fondre will probably go to Barnsley.

Definitely:

Adam Le Fondre
Billy Paynter
Gary Hooper
Jordan Rhodes
Lee Novak
Jermaine Easter (rated him when at Wycombe!)

Maybe:

Brett Pitman
Bobby Grant
Chris Dagnall

I take it the Jason Walker \"sign him up\" parade has stopped now?

Ridiculous.

Is he not too similar to Hayter? We need a Grant Holt, Danny Graham, Rickie Lambert type then someone to play off him I think.

Simon Cox on a season loan from West Brom maybe? He's in a similar situation to what BS was last year. Scored for fun at League One but not had much of a run in the team after a big transfer to a CCC club. He probably won't get much of a look-in in the Premier next season.

Simon Cox, Adam Le Fondre, Jordan Rhodes or Charlie Austin would do nicely for me.

I know ii's just a \"rumour\" but apparently Stock is on his way to the Blades in the summer with Billy & Montgomery coming to us. I've no idea how strong this runour is but a few people have heared the same thing.

I'd take that deal.  Stock going to the Blades and BS and Montgomery coming the other way, frankly...  We've done OK without Stocky and great though, he is, Sharp alone would be worth the swapsie.

One name to replace billy next year......a fit Steve Brooker! Cost, nothing, height, scores and strength. He would fit the bill, who says that SOD's gamble couldn't pay of yet? I wouldn't bet against his judgement.

Nick Montgomery is out of contract after this season so they can't offer him out.

Rumour dismissed  B)

Jordan Rhodes would top my list.  Have seen him a few times and always impressed.  Scored a lot of goals and a constant threat in both the air and on the ground. Also a link to the club as his dad used to play for us in goals.  Not sure what type of fee he would command though.

Failing that, maybe a return to Yorkshire for Will Hoskins, particularly if Watford are relegated. Not really settled at Watford but was very impressive for the Millers!

I believe Bogdanovic at Barnsley is out of contract. Has scored some really good goals although there are questions about his work rate.

If the unthinkable happened and that Stock/Blades deal was really on the cards, I'd bite their bloody hands off. But it won't be will it? What football club would give any other club a couple of million qwuids worth of talent in return for a very good player who's spent the last 2 years struggling with a bad back? That's why I'd bite their hands off. Stocky might make it back, and he'd be worth his weight in gold if he did, but that's one helluva'n ask.

Cheers

Caleb Folan or Craig Fagan from Hull, they will be trimming their budget this summer and neither seem to have cut it in the PL but we do a job in the Championship

General consensus among Plymouth fans is that Fallon is one of the worst players they have ever had. They all rate Mackie very highly and on Saturday's showing I can see why.

It's going to have to be a loanee again for me- any proven goalscorer from this league or the one below will be out of our price range. You then start gambling on a player from League 2 making the step up and again, financially, we are not in a position to start gambling.

Unfortunately at this moment I can't offer any potential realistic suggestions but I believe Gary Hooper is on his way from Scunthorpe so I'd see who they have earmarked as his replacement and try to nip in first.

A pretty useful player called Robbie Fowler may be available. Short term fix I agree, but North Queensland Fury are in danger of going under at the moment and the manager, ex Rangers Ian Ferguson has already quit and Robbie doesn't know what to do with himself.
Nth Qld pay him $900k a year which is about 1/2 a million pounds, so not sure how that fits within our budget. I can tell you one thing though. He still knows how to find the back of the net and has scored some screamers this past season.

Cheers to all,

Phil

How about Reuben Reid?

I know he hasn't had the best time at Peterborough on loan and hasn't had much of a look in at WBA, but I doubt he'll be getting a game at Baggies next season, and I reckon he would be more affordable than most of the names mentioned in this thread. I was quite impressed with him when we played Peterborough last month - he had alot of pace, and played ok despite being out of position. I know he hasn't scored goals at this level, but he scored plenty for Rotherham, and maybe with a bit of O'Driscoll magic, he could be turned into a good player.

Another player who could be a realistic target is David McGoldrick. He is another one who has seen his chances limited this season with Forest, but has proved himself to be a capable striker in the past with Bournemouth and Southampton, and if Forest get into the Premier League, he could see himself looking to move elswhere to play more first team football. He has a bit of pace and caused us a few problems when we lost to Saints at home last season. I know he is another one who perhaps hasn't filled his potential at this level yet, but as we've seen with Billy Sharp, SOD has a good record of helping out of favour players to maximise their potential in the Championship.

Jon Stead for me, probably available at a reasonable price although wages could be a problem. An intelligent footballer who would buy into the SOD system, IMHO. ;)

Very likely that he'll sign for Coventry this summer unfortunately.
