True.

Would he have commanded a higher wage?

An unproven league 2 player can command a higher wage than a premier league player, not convinced on that one(Leicester must be made of money, not).

I know George Friend never made a big impact at Wolves but he would still have been on a decent wage, and could still be on a fair whack at the Rovers.

P.S. Now that it looks like Pearson will be unveiled as the new Hull boss on Wednesday,i wonder if Tom Kennedy is having second thoughts.

I got told exactly how much Kennedy was offered by Leicester and believe me, it's eye watering.  I doubt Leicester have learnt anything from their brush with disaster.

Sorry but how would anyone involved with Rovers know Kennedy's wages? The most anyone at the club will know is his wage demands which are not certain to be what he's actually on now. I also doubt Kennedy would make his earnings public knowledge.

1. I agree we need to know yes or no and move on, or find other fish to fry. We need players here for pre-season etc etc, although in Billy's case this is less apparent.

2. JR does right holding firm. It's clear he is/has done something re Sharp, and then done further things to obtain his services. We should not be held to ransom by club, player, agents. We have a good chance of getting Billy and many positive factors are pointing towards DRFC and the fact that he may even cost less to us than what other clubs may pay. The longer this go's on, the more likely our rivals for his signature will look elsewhere and thus no demand = less cost. It would be nice if the demand vanished.

After thinking about this a bit more, we may be getting carried away with this south yorkshire comment. It says he wants to stay in south yorkshire and fight for his place. Different meanings i think.

Not only that  \"But Sharp is understood to have informed United manager Kevin Blackwell that he wants to stay in South Yorkshire and force his way into the club's starting eleven\".

Irrespective of BS motive in allegedly saying that ( forcing hand or not ), it doesnt bode well for DRFC.

If it was true, Irish. I think you're reading between the lines a little too much. Its all a game, as we should really know by now. Billy may be saying that to appease Burnley, who have to be just a tad peaved that they've missed out on one of their targets. It certainly (to them, anyway) beats the hell out of beeing told he prefers to go to little ol' Donny! ;)

I think there's more to it than meets the eye, but, at the end of the day, its paper talk and that's about the end of it. I used to be told let's wait and see, so........

Alan, there may be a lot of truth in what you say, i suppose time will tell.

Am i alone in the thought that \"All eggs in one basket\" with Billy, may be folly.

Lets face it, at a transfer fee of something around 600,000 to 1,000,000 and wages of around 12,000 a week, its an awful lot of money to plough into a player who may suffer a major injury very early season ( of course he may not miss a game at all ).

To me, i prefer spreading the cost / risk on two players or even 3, ok, they may not have the \"Record\" of BS as goal scorers, but it makes more sense to me to do it that way.

However i concede that JR and his men know better than i, and must have weighed it all up.

He never actually said anything though did he?  Pure speculation on the behalf of the paper (who act as a mouthtalk for Sheffield clubs anyway).  All part of a game this, I'm sure.

Personally, I feel we should pull out all the stops for Billy. I feel he is that important to the way we play. For me, throwing somebodies goal scoring prowess into the mix is all well and good, but that does not necessarily make the team perform consistently to a system that is in place or to a required team standard.

You can liken it to the England set up and our current national plight. It's all very well our players being very good at X, but found wanting with Y and Z, yet when they come against players who are all merely just good at X,Y and Z, then they are out of their depth.

Billy is fortunately a good striker/finisher, but he also has A, B, C, D and so on and so forth. I also feel it's the system that suits his game, christ only knows what we would be like if we unleashed Billy and a fit Brooker on this league.

Billy and Brooker may not work the same, though, Cussie. Billy works because SOD plays him up there on his jack, with everyone else playing off him. It gaurantees Billy a starting place every week - and that could prove to be the biggest card we have to play!

Time to move on now.

Sheffield United
BILLY Sharp is staying at Sheffield United after rejecting the opportunity to join Burnley.
The striker, who scored 15 goals during a prolific spell on loan at Doncaster Rovers earlier this year, seemed destined to leave Bramall Lane when it emerged the Lancashire club were prepared to pay more than £1m to secure his services.

But, having spent the weekend mulling over his future, The Star can reveal that Sharp informed United last night that he wants to have \"one more shot\" at forcing himself into manager Kevin Blackwell's starting eleven.

Despite receiving what was described as a \"very lucrative offer\" from Brian Laws' side, sources close to the player have revealed he still harbours ambitions to steer the club he supports into the Premier League.

\"Everyone knows what Sheffield United means to Billy,\" one said. \"He wants to give it one more go, have one more shot at staying there.

\"Burnley's proposal was worth a lot of money but Billy, after thinking things through, just had a gut feeling that he wanted to try and see things through here. He didn't want to go and then regret it later because he's not only a United player. He's a fan too.\"

As well as dealing a major blow to Burnley's plans in the transfer market, Sharp's decision will come as a major disappointment to both Rovers and Leeds who had also been monitoring his situation closely.

Indeed, this newspaper understands that Laws, Blackwell's counterpart at Turf Moor, expected to confirm his capture later this week after having an undisclosed bid accepted by United's board of directors.

Sharp, who returned to South Yorkshire from Scunthorpe in 2007, has 12 months remaining on his present contract.

Meanwhile, United have ruled out the possibility of signing Aberdeen defender Charlie Mulgrew. The former Celtic full-back is now expected to head back to Parkhead after turning down a new deal at Pittodrie.

\"We couldn't agree terms, so we move on,\" said Blackwell

Reading that, it sounds like we never even appraoched Sheff Utd. All it said is that we were monitoring the situation.

I hope we act fast now and we really do have a backup plan.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_utd/8771687.stm

Nothing we don't know already, and nothing from Blackwell that suggests Sharp will get any more pitch time than he did prior to the loan spell.

I think we all conceed that we cannot compete with Sheffield United, and first team action there will always be Billy's number one choice. Looks like he might be back there, then on the move as a free agent when he doesn't get any joy.

We need to seek permission to talk to him, it sounds like Burnley got to talk to him, Sheffield United want rid or they would n`t have granted Burnley permission to speak to him, so really the ball is in our court and I would hope we are trying to gain permission as I type this

Just want to ask have any of the clubs involved said it is game over? Have SUFC came out and said we will not accept any more bids for Sharp, he is not for sale? Have DRFC said we are no longer pursuing Sharp as he is no longer for sale?

A player under contract can only be for sale if he wants to be sold, think there's more to this than meets the eye.

So, BBC Reckon :- \"Sharp is currently under contract at Bramall Lane for another year, but would be allowed to sign for a new club for free from January\".

He is free to TALK in january, not to sign for A.N.Other club. Jeez !!! ( although i suppose technically SU could release him at that point).

One possible option is that he gives it another go and finds that Blackwell still doesn't want (or know how) to use him. The problem is, can we wait for that to happen?

To gamble on that would run a serious risk of us ending up with nothing, and at the very minimum it would see us start the season weaker than last season.

We need to determine how accurate this latest news is and make a big decision on how we are to proceed from here.

Following on from the post about the rovers not even making contact with Billy.

I can confirm we have spoke personally with Billy, and JR is talking to him on a regular bases.

I personally don't think Billy will be at the blunts at the start of this session.

Do remember folks that there are no quotes in The Star there...actually there is one from Blackwell, but it is related to Charlie Mulgrew, not Billy.

If we can persuade Billy to come, I think he will. Sheff U are willing to sell him, we are in a good position now. Especially if the way has cleared and the competition for him has dwindled.

Have faith in John Ryan and SOD, they must feel it is still possible to sign him.

To be fair, KB would say that regardless of his true feelings… from a business point of view, if he said anything suggesting he didn't want Billy at the lane, he would basically be telling JR to name his price - especially after BS said he wants to stay in south yorkshire.

Just as honourable as SOD has been with Billy, and JR doing his bit, I can't for 1 minute believe that Billy would not speak directly to us once he's made up his mind.

For all we know Plan B and C may already be in operation.
