Brandon well put. I’m sure some saddo on here will invariably try to denounce your well written thread just to cause the usual upset and argument

Unlike yourself, aye phil?

''On the very odd occasion she did intervene (e.g. Scottish referendum) it was well judged and suitably subtle''

Unlike this comment, a British nationalist praising a comment of the Queen and interpreting it as poke in the eye to Scottish nationalists.

Maybe but a comment on pro-monarchy, do we all get a turn now without being slagged off?
How about me just mourn a great woman without having to have a debate about one thing or another!

Good point .... and how's this going (asking for a fed up friend)

Whilst we are on about the origins of English, here's an interesting thing.

Apparently the reason the Geordie twang is so different to Yorkshire and not obviously related is because the Newcastle area had an invasion of Vikings but they weren't the usual Danes. They were Swedes. Apparently.

You know The Swedish Chef on the Muppet show? You know how he speaks? Sort of nonsense but an up and down accent? Try speaking like the Swedish Chef but replace the nonsense words with words like Kevin Keegan, Newcastle United, Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle. Ta Da! You sound like Jimmy Nail!

I know a bloke from Norway who went to Newcastle and thought the locals were all taking the piss out of his accent.

I suppose at times like these the question of the Royals are exposed and come to the surface .

I've read a number of platforms over the last couple of days , this one is one of the kinder ones .

Clearly there is division , there always was , how you go about expressing your anti royal opinion is probably the question , you can be against something and show a reasonable amount of respect for the passing of The Queen I believe .

However it's also exposed some let's say irregularities from let's say also a certain section of society .

I noticed this last Sunday when Joe Lycett ripped the pyss out of Liz Truss , a couple of popular Daily newspapers didn't like it , it was even discussed in some parliamentary standards committee , I think they were offended , which is interesting .

The passing of the Queen and anyone pushing back on the question of the Royals is to condemned to hell and high water despite the powers that be more or less dictating to you that you will mourn for the next few days , you will listen to sombre music on the radio , there is apparently no other news worthy of broadcast ( there clearly is .... To say the least ) and you won't enjoy yourself this weekend watching the national game .

How incredibly woke so to speak   :woot:

They really don't like it back do they ? and I'm about as liberal left as Frankie Boyle .

I would never class myself as a fan of the monarchy, though my ambivalence to them has reduced the older I get. I don’t mind admitting though that I am genuinely sorry about the Queens death. I think it’s because she’s been a constant in the background of our lives that I’ve taken it for granted that she’d always just be around.

I’d have absolutely loved a penny for her thoughts on all of the people that she’s met over the years. Anyone who was anyone during the second half of the 20th century met with her. The Prime Ministers that she met for one thing. I believe that it’s fairly accepted that her and Thatcher didn’t see eye to eye due to her economic policy in the early 80’s but how about the other PM’s? Absolutely extraordinary when you think about it.

Well done, Syd, true to form with the ageist comments.

Maybe one day you'll shock us all and post something with a modicum of intelligence.

Elizabeth Windsor became Queen in 1952. That's 70 years ago. The Founding Fathers declared UDI in 1776. That's 246 years ago. So our recently deceased Queen was Monarch for over 28% of the life of the USA. That is another staggering statistic about HRH.

Just noticed Meghan was schmoozing the crowds with Will, Kate and Harry. How long before the Mail comes up with a "Meghan bit my child's face' story?

Fascinating. The new King Charles refers to his father as 'Papa" which is from the French. Unlike the Anglo-Saxons who go for "Dad".

Deep history.

I thought papa was Italian, as in what they call the Pope. Pere is French for father, isn't it?

Citroen advert.

Renault methinks..

Several versions including one starring Vic and Bob..

So to take this conversation full circle, in the car advert, even though it has French people in it, it was Nicole and Papa, not Nicole and Pere.

Etymology

From French papa, from Middle French papa, from Old French papa, from Latin papa, probably originally a reduplicated imitation of a child's early efforts at vocalising Latin pater (“father”). Compare Ancient Greek πάππας (páppas, “papa, daddy”).

Does it matter?  Pere is the formal French word for father but how many words are there in any language which are terms of endearment?

Anyway, what the new King affectionally called his parents, isn't important.

Knowing that the Queen was an old lady with health concerns, her death wasn't really unexpected, but it is really unusual referring to a "King" all of a sudden.

Of course it doesn’t matter IDM.
I was simply adding to the conversation.

That's fairly common among the upper class. Like a lot of the ceremonies we are going to see over the next few days it has its origin in the Norman invasion.

Some things change but some stay the same. But this is what it is like to be living thro historic ones.

I went to watch Wishbone Ash on Friday night. They were playing the Argos album (and Wishbone 4) in full.

During the introduction to one song they started playing the national anthem and I thought, that's not on the album? They then stopped and Martin Turner said 'that is the last time we are ever going to play God Save The Queen. Lets have a cheer for Queen Elizabeth'. They then continued into the rest of the song, The King Will Come.

It was quite moving.

Years later I found out the music from the Renault ad was by Robert Palmer.

Last night of the Proms cancelled.

Never did owt for me, but I can't think of a more apt way to celebrate the traditions that the Queen represented than by thousands of peoe dressed in Union Jacks singing songs about the glory of Britain's past.

Meanwhile, while songs and weather forecasts won't happen, the rail unions' response is that train journeys that weren't going to happen should now happen, cos they've called off their strike.

It does feel like everyone is falling over themselves to be seen to be doing something. For fear of being accused of not doing something.

M&S in Sheffield have closed off their escalators to show respect to the Queen.

We're a strange country.

Odd how the Queen, a lady not known for taking a political view on things or be outspoken about things called people who wouldn't get the jab selfish and made a plea for people to 'do their duty' and get vaccinated.

One of the reasons why my respect for her is very limited indeed and hugely less that what it used to be. Such a shame she had to become embroiled in this nonsense in the first place.
