Let's talk about the Barnsley game
« on October 26, 2024, 08:08:54 pm by selby »
First up of two cup games is Barnsley on Tuesday evening, and a game we need to take something from if we are to progress out of the group.
With Manchester United u23s hitting both clubs in the last few minutes of their games this game becomes a shoot out to have any chance of progressing and will test the management teams of both clubs ambition in the competition.
Both clubs have benefitted from winning and built on the competition in the past, Barnsley on more than one occasion and will fully realise how a club can build off this competition, so a hard game stands on front of us if only because of the past history of both clubs in past meetings.
After our great win today at Bradford, which was an energy sapping game mentally as well as physically we could well make changes to the line up.
Barnsley also had a good victory on the road at Shrewsbury winning 2-0 with another goal from Max Watters who just might on Tuesday show us what a duffer Moore was letting him leave here for nothing, and with Grant McCann's son a probable player for them there are a few side interest's in the game including  Craig and Fabio Jalo who took Anderson to pieces when he was 17years old and we took an embarrassing beating the last time we met in this competition.
So lots of interest, a competition not the most liked, and a preclude to another not that attractive and hard cup game at Barrow and a possibility of being out of all cup competitions once again well before Christmas, hopefully not, but a test of the managements ambition.
So a cup week ahead, and two good sides away to overcome, play like we did today at Bradford and we have a chance of getting through as we played well, and v Barnsley we should not give or expect any favours history demands it.
So lots to interest fans, lots to discuss, guess the line ups, and will grant be talking to their young un until Wednesday?
Let's hope we Play like today but be more clinical in front of goal, Ironside and Lawlor two expected changes if fit.
Are you going? can we afford to make changes? please have your say, Barnsley fans welcome.

Probably from our point of view a bit of a non event , how could playing a game in a minor competition you are already out of be anything else ? .

If this was against Rovers on Saturday in the first round of the FA Cup it would be a different thing altogether .

Clarke will probably play all the kids including Jalo ,Yoganathan and Lofthouse who all have had first team starts but other than that it will be lads of 17 and 18 years old I would imagine .

If Rovers want to progress and put a team out to do so then they should probably win .

If there's over a thousand home fans I'll be amazed .

Barnsley are out and I can’t imagine they will be up for this game at all.

If the club want to go through next phase we need to win to guarantee that

Is Tom Anderson still banned for this game? If not, he needs a game. If he is banned, it must be very close to being his last one?

The bench, I would think, will be some from today’s squad to help us comply with the competition rules. But, there’s a few that need some game time, so I think GM & Co. will change it around a bit.

Nixon, S’Barra, Fleming, Clifton, Close, Ironside probably all come into contention for starts?

Tom's served his 6 matches, Alan, but he still could have played in this if he hadn't, as the ban only included league games.

However, I agree that he should be given game time to bring him back up to speed. Jay and Joe seem to have made the CB pairing their own now, but either of them could get injured at any time.

I hope & believe Grant wants to progress in this competition. The further we progress the more prize money comes into the club, we have players like Lawlor, Nixon, Close who would benefit from game time & I don’t think it’s a competition that Barnsley particularly want to get ‘embroiled in’ so let’s go for it.

Barnsley are a poor team this season.

They seem to be doing alright to me. And even if they are, what they put out on Tuesday is going to be very different to the side playing on the league.

Barnsley are a poor team this season.

I wouldn't go as far as to say poor but definitely a work in progress .

Looking at the rules of the comp which I'd forgotten about it's likely Cosgrove will partner Jalo up top , Cotter RWB with the young Chelsea loanee in goal plus Craig who you know about .

Players hoping to impress and give Clarke selection options going forward is their motivation .

Craig hasn't lived up to the endorsement Rovers fans gave me when he signed but he's a young kid so it may well come as the season progresses .

There's plenty to play for with regard to some of our players , whether they can be assed is another matter .

It's a cup we should be trying our best to win & is realistically possible. Bristol Rovers at the Millennium was a fantastic day out. Admittedly introducing the u21 teams has took some of the sheen off the competition.

There will doubtless be an exception but I suspect there is no record whatsoever of a lower league side getting to any recognisable cup final and getting promoted. Perhaps there is one. The strains are just too much with relatively limited resources. It really is one or the other.

Bradford in 2013, got to the league cup final getting hammered by Swansea, then went on to beat Northampton in the play off final.

Bristol Rovers got promoted in 2007…

I suppose the counter argument would be how often has a cup run derailed a league campaign? More games means a higher risk of injuries but winning also breeds confidence. I’d also argue that we have very good squad depth and are more capable of rotation without significantly weakening the side than a lot at this level.

That said personally I don’t care about this competition!

He started off slowly with us, too, Tyke so he may well come good. If not, you can always ship back to us in January! ;)

Best of luck with the rest of your season (after Tuesday, of course).

There's definitely one, CBCB, and it's actually Barnsley themselves. A few seasons back they went to Wembley twice, winning both the FA Trophy and the League 1 play-off final.

I can't remember for sure, but I believe it was Millwall they defeated in the play-off final, and I'm pretty sure that Adam Hammill scored in both matches.

I reckon Tyke will be able to confirm.

Thanks Alan , hoping Rovers get promoted this time , time you were getting out of that league .

Not only did he score in both finals the goals themselves were crackers .

A bit of a legend is Adam , wish we'd got someone like that today , when he picked that ball up and started running at defenders you were up off your seat in anticipation .

Talented lad with that off the field flaw that so many of them have , liked a few beers did Adam .

I think this fits with the competition rules, this is my prediction with the same system as Saturday:

                          Lawlor

            Olowu   Anderson   McGrath

Emmanuel        Close          Kelly         Fleming

                         Gibson

                 Ironside       Yeboah

Ease Nixon in off the bench.

Gibson and Ironside will know Grant wasn’t happy with them and will want to show him a reaction after their replacements did.

*edited completely forgot about Emmanuel

The win at Bradford and two wins in cup games in a week would really create some interest around the club for a change,
It is well worth going for the wins for financial reasons alone, probably not at this early stage, but would give us a base to build on and the hope of better rewards down the line, A hard ask as Barnsley and Barrow will want to give their supporters a boost, Barnsley probably showing them the youngsters of the future, and Barrow to get back on track after a good start to the season looks to be fading.
Just go for it whatever team we turn out, everybody loves a winner.

A good cup run in the fa cup could free up some money for a striker with pace in January which is what we need to complement the rest of the squad

My thoughts entirely Tyke, Rovers will use it to give games to very good players who are being used less in league games, Barnsley will use it to blood their academy players. At that I reckon Rovers will win and progress, Barnsley will drop out of it and not care.

I’ll go for a radical

Lawlor

Nixon
McGrath
Anderson
Fleming

Kelly
Close
Clifton

S’Barra

Gibson
Ironside

in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

Subs. TSL, Senior, Emmanuel, Bailey, Molyneux, Yeboah, Broadbent

Usher wide.

Nothing ‘radical’ about that choice of team Alan.

A chance for Clifton to show he can actually ‘be arsed’, a chance for Sbarra to show he can offer something in a supporting midfield role or indeed something in any way to this group.

I would & have never doubted what Ironside brings to the table. 100% effort & commitment guaranteed, but I’m as much aware as he has that as a ‘No.9’, he has to weigh in with some goals in order to push for a regular starting spot otherwise, I can we’ll see Grant & the board looking to bring in a 3rd striker come the January transfer window.

I wouldn’t argue with your back four choice. Nixon (if & when fully match fit) will push hard for that right berth defensive spot. I’ve always rated him & it’s great we have so much competition in that berth.

Success breeds success & builds confidence, would love to see us go through in both competitions this week, but especially Saturday. What are the permutations to go through tonight, obviously a win will do it, but will a draw be enough & then win the shootout?

Barnsley cannot overtake us

If we equal Huddersfield's result with Man Utd U21s we go through by being above Huddersfield

But if Huddersfield win against Man Utd then we need only 1 point to go above Man U on goal difference

So 2 points is enough in all cases

I think there is a case if Huddersfield get 2 points then we could still go above Man U if we get one point from a high scoring draw (2 goals higher than the Hudds-Man U draw) - that would be assuming equal goal difference means goals scored wins out rather than head-to-head, so not sure
