Look at the report on the bbc website, especially the possession (40/60) shots, touches in the box etc.  we certainly have them a game, rather than 90 mins of attack vs defence which it easily could have been.

Would have been great to score at least once,  but otherwise an excellent performance.

Hughes best player on the park - very closely followed by Molly tonight who made things happen out of thin air, could have had 2 - proved me and others wrong and so pleased for him tonight above all the other heroes in Red.

RTID

Chilwell knew he'd been in a game tonight. He hugged Molyneux at full time. Only time he got close to him all night.

Chilwell didn’t come on until the second half. Think the hug was because he knew Moly had their defenders second guessing all game. They tripled up on him second half every time he got the ball. They’d also played against one another when Mols was at Hartlepool.

As our kid said, if Mols is not Championship standard he’ll eat his hat. Our kids not Mols.

Disappointed with the way Billy took the two opportunities he had on goal. The one second half where he found himself with just the keeper to beat & no defenders around him he hit first time tamely into the keepers hands when he had time to steady himself or even take another touch. Sadly I think he’s become a luxury we can ill afford to keep next season.

A Rovers goal would not only have been great to celebrate it would have been deserved.

I was looking forward to seeing Palace play but felt driving home that they epitomised Premiership players (apart from Hughes’s who has the engine of a Rolls Royce). Their number 5 who did seven rolls on the ground when tackled by Bailey (?) then got up & sprinted away when the ref gave nothing typified all that is crap about that level of ‘football’.

I thought the ref was leaning their way all game. A Rovers player only had to touch a Palace charlatan for them to go down & the ref duly awarded them a free kick. The tackle on Ennis was shocking. Couldn’t believe it didn’t warrant a card.

Well done boys. Proud of you.

The big difference was Hughes ability to link the play, pass through the lines, and bring momentum into the final third.

Rovers put in a big effort, but lacked the quality in midfield to deliver decent service to the front.
Olowu was outstanding, and Senior did well off the bench.

Not sure that this was a game for Ennis, who looked lost first half.
Some poor delivery from dead balls from Rovers, without enough variation.

All in all, a good solid session, but I never thought that a win was likely!
Something we've missed massively ever since Whiteman left. But fair play to Hughes , like you say moves the ball forward well into dangerous areas as opposed to making the easy sideways or backwards pass more often than not .

Gutted at switching off for the first goal, real sloppy one. Apart from that we did a lot well. Deserve plenty of credit for that performance.
Not sure it was a case of switching off, just unlucky that when it bounced back of the post it hit Billy and deflected the ball straight to their player 3 yards out!

The ball to Matetta was far too easy. He should have scored. We switched off.

I thought it was a foul, he ended up free because the guy next to him was pushed away. Clever, but a foul for me.

Before the game I was really interested to see which Rovers players  have REAL quality, not just working hard, but those not looking out of place, going nose to nose displaying their skill and composure against very very good players. I can now put that to bed. Sterry, Olowu and Mols are quite simply our best players. If we could’ve added two more with their quality I’d be very confident of an automatic promotion.

Surely you can add Anderson onto that list based on last night’s performance.?

Maxwell showed up well too in this company. He was reading the game in the way he did when he first got into the team before his injury - much potential there. In fact, once above the crude physicality of L2 a few more might well surprise us.

Definitely helps Hughes having teammates who make a yard to receive the ball and play it at pace. Constant movement up and down the pitch. They all have confidence  in each other to make the ball theirs, rarely miscontroling, rarely hesitating. We haven't really seen the likes of that since the O'Driscoll era.

The free kick for their first goal originated from Bailey hesitating to play a simple pass and being closed down.

Our best moments came from quick passages of play so we know the players are capable. It's just the belief and commitment that wavers.

Both goals were poor to concede from our point of view, we lost the ball unnecessarily cheaply in midfield prior to conceding the free kick.

Rovers gave a fantastic account of themselves last night and every Rovers fan should be as proud as punch. My old Grandad would have been delighted at giving a very decent premier team a game.

The difference in the teams (not just last night but in general) is two fold in my view; Palace made fewer errors and were very well organised. Each time Rovers had the ball the Palace players were back into their positions within a couple of seconds at most, preventing any quick attacking breaks. Rovers took just that little longer thus presenting a bit more opportunity to attack. Again, this isn’t just based on last night but what I tend to see watching most cup games.

Well done to the team though and I’m sure that Rovers will be right up there at the end of the season.

On reflection, I think we created more opportunities than Plymouth v Liverpool with Plymouth getting the rub of the green with a handball penalty. Plymouth obviously defended for their lives to keep Liverpool out but offensively, I think we put up a better fist of it and a goal even at two down could have made it very uncomfortable for Palace.

Totally agree with you. Rovers created quite a few good chances last night which, against a defence as well organised as Palace, is some achievement.

It seemed every corner created panic in the Palace defence.
We said a goal would have been fair justice particularly watching the highlights back and seeing the way the pulled both defenders away to free up Mateta for the opening goal.
Also the foul on  Ennis would 9 times out of 10 merited either a yellow or red.
Well done to the team last night.

Hughes was the difference between the two teams last night.
His passing was really good (I think he only gave the ball away a couple of times) and he was constantly moving into space to make himself available to receive the ball or offer himself up as an option.
Our boys gave a good account of themselves overall but unlike others, I thought that Maxwell was our weak link defensively, they got behind him several times and his distribution was quite poor.

I was hugely impressed with Wharton and Hughes. Their ability to create forward momentum from the least promising of situations was superb. Time and again, they'd pick up the ball in deep midfield under pressure. In L2, we'd have done our job at that point. The opposition midfield would play the ball to defenders or keeper. Not those two. ALWAYS looking for the quick pass forward, or dribble out of the congestion or half turn reception of the ball to make 5 yards of space.

We aspire to do that down the wings and some of the Molyneux/Sterry interactions are excellent. But those two for Palace were doing it time and again right through the middle.

No shame in that for us.
