I know. Back in the 90's i knew our village bobbys in Scawsby by name, and they knew me.    One even rode a cycle around and lived on our street.

Even though a lot of us were scallies, we still had respect for the local plods. These days i have no respect for the police whatsoever.

Fair shout this. As a kid in scawsby back then they always came in to school and were about the area.

Aye PC Plumridge was always in Saltersgate. You'd have thought he had f**k all else to do!

I went to Saltersgate and have to admit. Never heard of the bloke.

They might need a baseball bat by the bed too if the burglars came upstairs.

Here is a little tip for you. If your gonna have a baseball bat next to your bed make sure you have a baseball too. If it gets messy after you would stand less chance of getting into trouble with the law.

Yep, I know that prez, which is why I wouldn’t have the bat there.
I was just suggesting to Filo that it might not be a good idea to take his keys upstairs with him.

Fortunately no, it was just what I was told by a retired policeman. I keep my golf clubs in my bedroom just in case I need a 9 iron in the middle of the night.

Very good friend of mine woke up this morning to find that both the cars had been robbed off his drive last night.

Edenthorpe.

Keyless start by any chance?

Nope! Broke in despite the house doors being locked & lifted the keys.

Always take the car keys to bed

I always leave mine downstairs where they can be easily found - last thing I want is to be woken from my much-needed beauty sleep by a tooled up t**t in my bedroom rummaging for my car keys.

It's only a lump of metal at the end of the day and there's a reason we have insurance.

I will know long before anyone gets to the bedroom that someone  is in the house, thats where a early hours baseball practice comes useful

According to the DFP, this last 12 months has been the most violent in the entire history of Donny, with 18 shootings, 13 stabbings, 7 rapes, and 4 murder investigations.

I don't know what the answer is. I'd love my grandkids to be somewhere else, but I think most towns and cities in the UK will be pretty much the same.

My nearest large town is probably just Chesterfield and it is nowhere like on this scale the amount of violent crime and sexual assaults. This is why when i read the DFP, i am constantly shocked at the frequency of incidents.

All towns and cities have their issues but whenever i return to Donny, it is not the same feeling as when i left. It feels a bit more unsafe, oppressive and more unsavoury characters knocking about. When i visit Chesterfield for example or Buxton (admittedly a smaller town) i feel 100% safe.

The size of Donny though for a large town cannot be underestimated. I remember when i lived in Scawsby, it seemed to take an age even to drive to the other side of town, say Bessacarr yet when i visit Chesterfield, i'm out of the Peaks and through Chesterfield within a few minutes. Donny always feels traffic riddled and big. Maybe i'm now used to living around small towns and it is more noticable?

I'm a Donny lad born and raised until my mid 20's but i am so glad i moved away which is sad. The town looks like it has had lots of investment though so not sure what the issue is with the crime etc.

I have a cricket bat at the side of my bed, in the spare bedroom there’s the rest of my cricket gear pads, gloves etc.
For those in the know it’s a G&M Maestro, it doesn’t look like much but it’s got a right “middle “ on it.

I think this thread is now starting to eat itself with posters outdoing each other for severity of cause.

Just remember that for all the figures quoted and even with the DFP trying to drum up some sales, the vast and i mean vast majority of folk in Donny have never had any of this Armageddon happen to them. Donny is a big town, it has City type crime and issues like any other big town or City but we are till talking small numbers in the greater scheme of things.

In my neck of the woods the biggest crime committed over the last 12 months was the Bin busters van forgetting to wash my neighbours bin and the green thumb bloke forgetting to do the back garden.

Let's get some perspective :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the thread or the contributors personal anecdotes which are their opinions. Just saying that things can be made to look and feel very dark and alien by a voracious press and media outlets.

It can also be assumed that something is worse than it is from first impressions. I was born and brought up in one of the biggest shitholes in Donny, to most people not familiar to the area it would of appeared to be hell on earth but from my experience it was never as bad as made out and usually quite a lot better, now-days people still consider it to be as bad or worse but i know people who live there and their experiences differ to the perceived norm.

Sometimes perception and actualities differ greatly.

Well said Danum Don.

Form a queue to provide good news about Donny.
I’ll start:
All praise to the woman who goes out every week to pick up litter from around our way.

Bravo to all the volunteers at St John the Evangelist Church in Balby who run the food bank. Impressive set up.

Are they not paid to do that though?

They get an allowance. In my local one in London they get about 10k a year. If you take up a post in cabinet you get some more on top. But no pension and really shit pay considering the responsibility and decision making power you have
